HELP pups at risk?

Recommended Posts

My bitch had her pups 3 weeks ago and now, Well I kept her and her sister in 3 weeks befor, she had them till now, because of the threat of canine herpes and the effect it can have on a litter but now they are three weeks old and can control and raise there own body temperature they have a better chance of fighting it off should they come in contact with it, was nearly ready to take mum and sister out to there favourite place the woods used to going 3 times a day and started to read up on parvo, distemper ,ect, and I know pups get a certain amount of immunitity from the bitch, but pups cant be innoculated till 8-10 weeks thats why when you get a new pup you dont take it out till it's had all it's jabs, so do it mean I should not take mum and sis out for another 5 weeks as they will be in contact with the pups.

Am I being paranoid, as my other bitch who didnt have pups is climbing the walls, JRT,s parents and granparents 1 granparent was a black and tan ratter hence the rotty looking colour on one dont explain the buff one though, these dogs are more pets than your type of killer dogs you normally have on here, only killed 2 rabbits and lots of mice so please dont mail me are they for sale or that other shit hes only a puppy seller bollocks , I only want CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK, sorry if this offends any one because i''ve seen some replies if someone mention's pups.

As you say, the pups will have maternal immunity from their dam's milk. I always let my bitches out to exercise as soon as they want to: older experienced bitches don't take kindly to being deprived of their fun for weeks on end. Mine exercise off lead where loads of other dogs have been, and I'm sure you'd have a fit if you saw the mud and cow shit they trample through but I've never had a problem.

If you live in a high risk area for Parvo and Distemper then I'd simply say wash the bitch's feet with an anti bacterial disinfectant before letting her back in with the pups. Do you gown and mask up and frantically disinfect yourself before seeing the pups? I wouldn't have thought so, and you could just as easily carry some bacteria in to your house just by walking down the road where other dogs have been.

It's good to be careful, but you can be over careful in my opinion. My dogs have never had booster jabs and I'm sure their immunity is sky high because of all the other dogs and animals they come into contact with on a daily basis, not to mention the shite they roll in and dead things they pick up during their daily exercise. A good strong immune system is worth everything and that immune system can only be strong if it is continually being boosted by exposure to bacteria etc. I only worry about are Parvo and Distemper, which happily are not prevalent in my area. Obviously I do keep the dam away from rat infested ditches whilst she's feeding pups though.

Hope this helps.

it's definitley good that you consider such precautions, but you are worrying a little too much.

as skycat has said, with a little common sense regarding sanitation you can let mum out asap. certainly it would be good to keep her on a lead if possible, but if she's supervised that should be fine.

she ought to be kept away from all forms of excrement and dirty water, but running around in the woods should be fine!

good luck with them!
