amy1695 0
I have just fostered a sight hound. I was told he is a whippet x saluki. I have never owned a breed like this and I know nothing about them. I have had German shepherds, collies and huskies before. This is a new challenge. He is 2 and a half years old, has no basic training at all and has just been toilet trained. Inside the home, he will be encouraged with treats, only for short periods though. He gets bored. Outside, he has no interest in food. How am I supposed to teach him to walk on a lead? He's a strong boy and pulls all the way! Also, he cannot be let of the lead. How can I tire him out when he only has a small amount of freedom? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Check collar for the pulling, walk him for a good few hours correcting him every time he pulls everyday for a while until he's too tired to resist, then work on getting him to walk nicely to heel after that see if you can bike him safely. Tiring him out should come first imo. If you can teach him to sit and stay (with good food like chicken in the house/garden),then you can work on some basic recall, get the dog to stay while you walk away then every now and then instead of going back and rewarding him for staying, call him and run away, get him chasing you and when he reaches you reward him, basically make it a fun game. I reckon you're much better seeing a dog trainer before you let him off in public no matter how good he gets in the garden/house,and of course make sure he's stock broken. Just take baby steps with the training,5 mins a day,but keep it fun and interesting for the dog,if he'll do a bit more up it and if he can't focus for that long do less. But for exercise, tiring him out will help massively and lead walking alone will tire him out eventually.
Blackbriar 8,569
Sound advice, that, mate ! A tired dog is more inclined to listen to you....
TAXI DRIVER 549
Once you`ve bonded with him run him next to your bicycle(whilst still on his lead) for a few miles .Saluki crosses will love it.You can increase the mileage as you see fit. This will encourage him to eat and relax also.Good luck.
