DogFox123 1,379
I've worked in the Rail and Construction Industry all my life, doing lots of hours and plenty of weekend work grafting my arse off. I'm not getting any younger and don't fancy being a work horse all my life. Being a COSS on the railway and having the SSSTS ticket I'm pretty clued up on Health and Safety. I'm thinking of making a career change and getting into the Health and Safety side of things. NEBOSH is the qualification to have and opens up great opportunities for a great career. Has anybody on here done the Diploma or General Certificate? I've read it's extremely difficult to pass as the wording of the questions are really tricky to fathom. Any information would be massively helpful, cheers. Edited February 3, 2016 by DogFox123
Onlyworkmatters 1,584
Are you still in the railway industry, if you are and are in the RMT they'll help put you thru all the courses you need, that's the way I started, Nebosh was too much headwork for me, I went ES, site supervisor, site manager route, money for f**k all
TUFFTY 1,484
Try and stay on the railway mate. There pensions are the best there is.

Don't get me wrong I could earn a good living on the Railway but I don't agree with nights at all, I suffer from crippling insomnia when doing that shift. I was thinking of doing the RIMINI Planner course but I've heard it's hard to find employment solely for that job. Did you fail the NEBOSH then?

I bet becoming a P6 Planner is just as hard as passing the NEBOSH. I was just about to book the SSOW planner course until I spoke to a fella who had the ticket who was struggling to find work solely has a planner.

Yeah I've read it's not a case of what you know but more of how you write your answers, meant to be a pain in the arse. If passed though it opens the door to be earning mega bucks. Cheers mate, I don't have the luxury of doing any intensive courses as I still have to earn a living. To get the NEBOSH diploma I would have to study like crazy, not an easy task after 12 hours of grafting. I'll take a look at the IOSH, hopefully that could open up a few doors. Does IOSH open up job opportunities or would I need more? Edited February 3, 2016 by DogFox123

NEWKID 28,136
An old mate of mine had to leave the marines for medical reasons, had a good pay out and went down the NEBOSH route. Not seen him for a good long while, but was working with a mutual friend on Saturday and he told me he's working for a european company (Danish I think) and on serious money, don't know all the ins and outs but sounds like a lot of risk assessment writing for job specific hazards. He spends a week a month away the rest of the time home based, but earning really good money. Personally I hate H&S and writing RAMS is probably the most boring thing in the world IMO, but there's certainly money in the H&S world and I'd say that'll be the case for good while yet.

Tbh whenever I'm on a course I tend to shine in the classroom compared to other guys. Don't get me wrong I like hard work, I'm a grafter but can be clumsy and heavy handed and lack common sense hahaha. I'm definitely one of those guys that's better at the theory side of things, I'm like a baby elephant.
