Minkenry 1,044
Hello every one! I'm from the U.S. and I know most everyone on here are Europeans, but I'm hoping that someone could help me connect with some U.S. guys who are breeding lurchers. I need a good all round dog that can run fast, and use it's nose. I want to hunt cottontail rabbits and jack rabbits (our local species of hare), but my main use of the dog will be to work with my hunting mink. In order to be a good mink dog, the dog needs to have a good nose for locating hiding prey like rabbits and ground squirrels out in the desert, rats along streams and ditches, and trailing the mink if I lose her. If it didn't get so cold here (-6 to -12 Celsius is not uncommon, and there are times it gets considerably colder) I would consider getting a whippet, as I already have a few connections with guys who have hunting bred whippets. But I fear our cold temperatures and often rocky terrain would be too much for most whippets. I have been advised to look into finding a collie lurcher, or possibly a 3/4 whippet or greyhound x 1/4 patterdale or jagdterrier. Does anyone know of any U.S. guys breeding any lurchers or other hunting dogs that might fit my goals? Thanks! Joseph Carter Edited November 16, 2015 by Minkenry Quote Link to post

krawnden 1,036
Joseph - try sending dirtwinger off here a pm - he's in the US and has runners that he uses on various types of hare (if you haven't already seen any of his posts check em out - superb photos and video footage of his dogs in action alongside his hawks. He follows the hunt from horseback). Don't know if he breeds himself, but if not he should be able to tell you where he gets his from. Also a lady called Teddy Moritz who certainly used to be big into lurchers, but I don't know if she still is. I know she hunts with dachsunds and birds of prey. I have an email address of hers from 2012. Don't know if it's still current but pm me if you'd like it. Best of luck with your search... 1 Quote Link to post

Minkenry 1,044
Does anyone know how I can get in contact with dirtwinger? I know he runs lurchers on jack rabbits here in the U.S., in combination with his falcons who work the hares with his lurchers. I sent him a PM, but I don't know if he's still active on this page.... his last activity on here was clear back in May. Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
If dirtwinger is Tim from the far Southwest I have his number. If not, The guy I know has a litter of first cross whippet x jagdterrier. Either way, there aren't many guys doing it so it's nice to know where they are.
