Old side by side

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I went out for the first time with an old side by side that I bought for £50. It looks a bit rough around the edges but it has no head ache, inside barrels are clean and it feels good to hold and it fits like a glove.

On the first drive I shot 2 pheasants within minutes then got another shortly after I could not miss with that gun.

My point is, it does not matter how much a gun costs its how you feel about the gun cos I could not be happier with that cheap gun. I dont know what chokes are in it or feck all.

All I know is it did not cost thousands and I am chuffed to death.

Has any one found similar or what.

Many decades back, when they first started producing Folding 12 bores, I bought a brand spanking new one. I took it out and caught a crow in the top of a none too tall tree. Up went the gun. It felt f*cking AWFUL. I fired. The crow f*cked off!

I had a few more shots out of that wretched thing - felt like I was shouldering a bent crutch, with one hand, every time!

Straight back to the shop and was more than happy to hand it back at a substantial loss.

As Mr Rothery agreed with me; 'If the gun just doesn't fit ye and feel right .....'.

Conversely, of course ..... ;)

i bought my first shotgun a couple of years ago.....an old spanish side by side.....£110 a bit rough but useable....i went on to buy a single shot .410 and then spent £440 on a semi auto (plus extras-sling/cartridges etc...) anyway i am back with the side by side and use that exclusively now...its rough, but it fits and is lighter and i like it.......i wish i hadn't spent £600 note on teh other two :wallbash: but there's no point selling them as i wouldn't get a lot for them

Spoke too soon as the old sbs started sticking shut when the first barrel is fired and it wont open until the second barrel is fired. I think it must be the firing pin sticking in.

Hey well these things happen.

probably be OK the more it's used  . I think the old guns have more character :drink:
