Commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary begin today. In early June of 1940, small, privately-owned boats of all shapes and sizes were volunteered to make up the largest flotilla ever assembled, and completed what Churchill described as a "miracle of deliverance". At the end of operations, over 300,000 troops had been rescued from the beaches of France, and lived to fight another day........ beast 1,884 Posted May 21, 2015 Report Share Posted May 21, 2015 my late uncle was in the royal navy during ww2 and was part of the evacuation fleet. he never spoke about it much, but some of the things he said about it would make you cry, absolutely heartbreaking .
