my lurcher needed a lot of stitches recently, particularly inside his back leg where the muscle was also punctured quite deep.

the vet sewed them all up,leaving no drain,i asked but they said it makes the infection risk too high,a couple of days later i was back because as i suspected would happen, his back leg that was stitched had filled with fluid under the stitches.

they drained a bit with a needle and said its normal and would be gone in a day or two,it didn't,next thing the stitches have split open and got infected (which at least let the fluid drain out) and i'm back in again getting more anti-biotics and gels to help this heal, though it will probably need re stitching as well.

Am i being paranoid or are they trying to feck me over and get more cash out of me?

My dog was recently attacked, puncture wound to front leg and muscle, vet seemed desperate to want to stitch it up but held off because of were it is and said that because it was a bite wound it would of damaged muscle/tissue and stiching would of caused infection, antibiotics and regular cleaning seems to be doing the trick. Fluid allowing to come out freely and seems to be healing well.

My main method is to flush the puncture wound or cut with bedadine using a sering. After getting the wound good and clean only then will I sow or staple. If the wound is deep, I will leave a small opening at the bottom for it to drain. Sometimes I will use this same opening to continue flushing the wound with bedadine via a sering and blunt needle but being carefull not to inject the dog only to flush the wound. I can also get a little antibiotic ointment into the wound if I feel compelled to do so this way.

If you leave the puncture open then flushing it 3 or 4 times a day is good. Hydrotherapy (running cool water on it) is good to do 3 times daily. If the wound was pretty bad or i feel like it got some bacteria in it that wasn't flushed out soon after the wound occurred, I will give a shot of penicillin as a preventative for infection.

If the dog can get to the wound to lick it, he will help keep the open wound cleaned himself. I've always been told it is best to leave a puncture open to drain but i prefer to clean it and close it except for a small hole on the bottom side to allow it to drain.

If infection sets in, an antibiotic stronger than penicillin should be used and an antibiotic such as that is only obtained from a visit to the vet here.

I don't have hardly any experience with dog bite wounds but I've heard they sure get the dog sore and swollen. All my trama experience comes from catching hogs with dogs. I'm no vet and I don't mean to sound like one if that was the case. Hog doggers like me just normally learn how to care for their dogs themselves do to the nature of things.

Hope I helped

Dean

thanks for the replies,i think we're a lot more closely monitored over here so wouldn't risk anything like sewing a dog up myself even if i was 100% confident in my ability.

but the recurring common fukking sense theme is you need to leave somewhere for the fluid to drain from,i asked them last time and they said it would have caused more trauma to the skin,as in less stitches would cause more trauma.

the only question is whether they've f****d up intentionally to get more money out of me or not or not.
