treecreeper 1,136
its a while back since I built mine so a better camera might be available but should give you an idea. Quote Link to post
meathumper 29
I had the same problem with some farm land, its been work in the past, locals with air rifles, also poachers from the road side. Super shy rabbits they run as soon as the see me they even ran when my car pulled up. There out all day most days with a hi vantage point can see anything comming and bolt. They could be shot if using the stone walls to creap up on them, lamping was a no no as poachers got them shy. So I bit the bullet and bought nv, love it, they have no clue now. I can happily shoot one after the next using the wind as my friend. Quote Link to post

Yes that sound about the same as my issues - I am going to speak with the farmer on monday and suggest I snare to help get numbers down and give me time to build the kit that treecreeper has shown me. Salivating at the thought of both. Also had a very kind offer from another forum member to ferret the furry fiends. Just as an aside this forum is the dogs 1 Quote Link to post
mark williams 7,568
A good place to start the "learning process" with regards to snaring rabbits is along the fence lines Clabedoo, cut your teeth there. atb. 1 Quote Link to post
John Stott 202
If I get a new clearance job I leave it for a few weeks, walk it up at different times and they get used to you. Then the stupid things line up to die. Recce is well worth it for anything really. I have taken to multi cam of late, seems to be quite effective although I am brainwashed DPM as are all Catterick products I dont rate civilian patterns much, too specific in design, and cost the earth. Soldier 95 is very good. Although treated myself to some ATACS and one word in the trees, wow! As to night vision I have not yet plunged, I prefer dawn and dusk ( and my mam wants me in by ten ) I also have lie up spots where I cannot clear totally. I don't snare now, its ethical with me and they are time consuming. Also ferrets stink and bite, get lost and are a pain in the bottom. I like my S410 in .22 for rabbits, pulled more to .177 as time wears on though. The Ultra and HW100 have both killed cleanly at 55 yards. This lever action is also silent, a new thing to me but I am impressed. Sounds like you have a big job on. Good luck. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
As said some local chancer has being having a go at them without the farmers knowledge, all very good advice above, also try building a permanent hide in a couple of locations, let the bunnies get used to it, then creep in before light and bobs your uncle. 1 Quote Link to post

Sounds like a s510 in .177 may be on the cards John had a few shots from a kind bloke at a range i was at a few weeks ago, so smooth and the level could be pulled with your little pinkie lol Edited March 23, 2015 by Durham John 1 Quote Link to post

One niggle for me has always been the magazine, you need high mounts. It is a lovely rifle mind. I had thought long and hard but the HW wins by design, low mounts, flush magazine, same with BSA as well. The S510 is a lovely rifle though, they all are from that stable. Quote Link to post
clabedoo 59
Guys thanks for all the info - all taken on board. Was gonna speak with farmer today but domestic issues won out - he is working heavily on the drainage in the adjacent fields at the moment so I shall have a chat but I guess that means dusk and dawn until he sorts it. As always no shortage of sound advice - thanks chaps. 1 Quote Link to post
clabedoo 59
So out with the lamp to see what the score was and yes there were bunnies there - lamp shy - so NV build in the offing - but also shed loads of badgers - does this mean no snaring - I guess so. Gives me an excuse to build the NV kit anyway Quote Link to post
