Dog Started Marking.

never had this lad from a pup so missed a trick getting him out ferreting as a youngster so that's one thing i got lined up for him in the future.

iv generally discouraged him from holes not wanting him to drop in where he shouldn't but just lately he started marking rabbit holes which is good.

 

he certainly been a bit of a ball ache at times with recall but we getting our act together now and i cant fault his working ability which makes our daily walks lot more enjoyable than when i first got him lol.

 

his mark isn't always quite as obvious as i would expect,its not head down hole tail going ten to the dozen,he puts head down stands stock still no movement at all then moves to another hole repeating the process then going back to first hole again giving me a look now and then as if to say its in there lol,lot holes he sniff up and move on so seemed to be coming together so i dropped a ferret in a small set the other day he marked and single rabbit bolted so was well happy with him practice makes perfect hopefully.

 

perhaps its all the time out i been giving him and just letting him get on with it that has now brought this out in him either way didnt think it was going to happen next step break him to the ferrets ready for next season hopefully.

 

out of interest do your bushers mark holes,is it a very obvious mark or subtle even?

A check of every hole nothing at home moves on. Has given a positive mark from a young dog now 8 to date never told lies. Good luck ferreting with your dog.

fair play mate must be nice to know you can rely on the dog for a definite mark, hope to myself in the future just got get him broke to ferrets and we will be away cheers

Mine marks holes. The only problem is she also 'guards' holes. . . . . quite furiously. . . . from any and all other dogs. Bit embarrassing at times. But handy if someone had a terrier they didn't want following to ground.

 

Unfortunatly, despite putting ever effort into picking a dog that would not go to ground, she has been, and now. . . . if she can fit. . . . .

i managed to pick up a couple ferrets few months ago and he doesnt seem to show much interest in them around the hutches so may well be fine with proper introduction,i was told he not seen any previous but who knows although in the field no matter the size anything is fair game to him.

I like a dog that don't go mad at holes when marking, best one i ever had just got close and had a sniff, then backed out staring at the hole and her tail bent over sideways, never false marked or disturbed the set going mad at it, mongrel terrier. Bitch iv'e got now marks well, she don't go mad or make a noise, but she likes to get in and have a good sniff, comes out when told and just stares, shame i don't ferret now, she'd be top notch if i did some with her i reckon.
