pjST93 0
Hi all Completely new to all shooting, been reading up the laws and do's and don't and read a very informative post in the new user section about the types of rifle and pellet etc etc Firstly i obviously want to start off in the garden to practice with targets then maybe move up to rabbits The law for air rifle seems to be over a certain power output needs a gun license.. So was just wondering if the rifle im looking at requires one or not It is a SMK Super Grade XS19 Anyone know any info and this and would you recommend it for a newbie? Thanks all!! walshie 2,804
I don't know much about specific air rifles, but you can have an air rifle up to 12ft/lbs of power with no licence. I'm sure yours would be below that. Someone with more knowledge will be along shortly to give you the specifics. Quote Link to post

On one website its quoted as over 11ft/lbs so hopefully over 11 under 12 haha Thanks mate Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
They wouldn't be allowed to sell it if it was over that. More grief for everyone than you'd need. Quote Link to post
pjST93 0
Just found the SMK B2 which seems very popular amongst new starters.. This seems more realistic to start off with and a fair price if i lose interest Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
Spend cheap and buy twice. Start with a HW my man, and it'll last you for life. Keep in the springers if I was to give one key piece of advice. Best of luck. 1 Quote Link to post
treecreeper 1,136
Good advice above, you would be better off going to a club and trying some before you waste your money on a smk for me but depends on how much you want to spend. You'll be fine shooting in your garden providing you have adequate backstop and no pellets leave your boundry. 1 Quote Link to post
SimonC_Here 36
The XS19 isn't a bad rifle, the B2 is rubbish. Yes, they can be fiddled with to get them shooting nicely, but why bother with the hassle. As said a second hand HW would be a good gun or a Hatsan 55 (or 60) 2 Quote Link to post
Lloyd57 98
I'm with Res on this leave the smk alone and get a HW. Lloyd Edited March 9, 2015 by Lloyd57 Quote Link to post

VWman 232
Hello pj I am just looking as well and on my first trip to the gun shop I was a bit over-whelmed but the choice but soon sussed out that for a bit more money you can get one of the better makes. If you buy from a shop they will test the power I would hope but am not sure about this thing about guns going over. Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
My first ever air rifle was a B2. Absolute rubbish, but it started a passion that's been annoying to the wallet ever since. Dropped enough starlings with it though back in the day. 1 Quote Link to post
