pigeonphill 69
best way mate and im being seurous dont listen to drivle on here, go to someone that makes nets like mick dadd or if you were up here in scotland teach you in an hour or two , i would say a day helping a ,man and learning how to do its a day worth well spending , forget about all the nails and boards do it properly , learn with needle and spacer then when you get handy you can gauge the mesh and tallyho do it free hand like fishermen do on boats harbours for a living , he asked and some of us tried to explain how to do it . and yes using needle and mesh gauge is the way to do it nowadays but to say you, then can then do it with out the mesh gauge is DRIVLE to me how or why would you want to do it with out one unless you are repairing a net with a hole in itThis lad does ok without a boardMICK DADD .. NET MAKER: fair point but how many other people do you know what make a net not using a gauge Quote Link to post
The one 8,594
There was a Pakistani lad at the Midlands won the net making comp two years on the trot ? Never used a net board either Quote Link to post
fluff 410
youse are feching crazy at times net boards , net gauges ,nails , free hand is a lot quicker and once you use the same twine, you get good with it ,what i would say to guys is use a gage for every end mesh to get your size incase your creeping with your sizes , learnt to make nets 34 years ago as kids never had a net gage until maybe twenty years ago , we bought a cheap 4z shitty net copied the mesh size then made it to our requirments lay you nets and gear we are sailing to waters dangerous and impailing ,come sweat or cold getting old , o the bonny shoals of herring there must be some originals on here who were harbour kids helping the fishermen mend there gear salmon nets etc in days gone by , learning to splice , mend tore trawl nets , learnt of old poachers ,etc ,or is it all net books vidoes , we first started with irish linnen and 8z irish cotton , then staple net nylon hairy like hemp but rot proof ,never saw woodenboard net gauge until ninties Quote Link to post
Moe 108
Made my first nets the nail method way in 1989, was shown by a couple of old rabbiters from cumbria.quite easy and quick when you get the hang of it, happy days. Quote Link to post
jocky 198
thanks moe, but can you remember how to make the frames , as i cant. Quote Link to post
fluff 410
moe dont think its quick useing nail method ,ive only saw it once and was not near as efficient as free hand proper net making better stitching it on a ring or toggle and working away from it youle soon get the hang of it , Quote Link to post
