Rookie

I've had my rifle for nearly a year now, so still very much a rookie but want to up my game a bit and bag a few more Charlie's. Is there any advice on finding their path, tracking them, finding their den, best time of day to go out etc.

Ive spent a few evenings out with whistle but with no luck, most probably down to the calling being awful but maybe location too.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

I started with no guidenece either mate. Get on YouTube look up fox calling that'll give you an idea how to call. I've found this time of year early morning best. And have also found the call not as effective this time of year as the foxes are very much pre occupied getting their leg over

You could try baiting an area to draw them in, I find offal, blood and fish oil works well

Personally I think now is the best time to be out calling as you'll get a good few dog fox's out ranging for vixens and testing boundaries. That said if you know your calling isn't up to scratch don't over do it as Charlie ain't stupid and you'll end alerting as opposed to enticing him.

 

Baiting an area is the trick to begin with and if you want to call try a few meek squeaks as opposed to going full-on distressed. There's a lot to be said for subtlety sometimes.

Keep in mind mr fox is a creature of habit, usually emeging from cover from the same run,and moving along hedgerows, have a walk around and note these likely spots during the day and setup accordingly after dark,and lime deer stalking keep the wind in your face,so they cant get a wiff of your old spice
