trenchfoot 4,243
I've a little collie cur pup, 5 1/2 month that I brought in to replace my ageing ratching cur. She is as bright as a button in many ways, but compared to the others I have reared she has been very slow to show any sign of knowing what the big black blob on the end of her snout is for. When out with the other dogs, she acts just like the pup she is. Generally making a nuisance of herself until the others dog/s get on something. Yet when just the 2 of us, all that confidence has disappeared and she has barely wandered 10 yards from my side. But the last couple of days I can see the changes coming. Yesterday we crossed a line where I had seen a hare trot by. Nose down, then head up checking. A bit of spin on the spot and nose down again. I stopped and watched, expecting the usual 10, 20 yards trot, then return to heel. But no, this time she was away, into the rush beds. stopping, looking, then back again trailling. Old hartley was up and away, leaving the dog unsighted. A quick whistle and she was back at heel. Made a big fuss and moved on. I wasn't for getting my hopes up, but twice today she did the same. Once on a bunny that ahd slid into a small pile of snow covered bramble, and the second time whilst out with my old bitch. She stopped fecking about and turned almost back on herself, and took a line on air scent. she left the old lass behind and flushed a couple of roe out of the rushes. Startled her, so I called her back to heel. Those days are in the past. just chuffed the penny is starting to drop. Thought I'd got another duffer 4 Quote Link to post
