Patterdale Lines And Their Uniqueness

Recommended Posts

This is my first time into these dogs, and I'm asking for genuine reasons - to provoke discussion rather than argument

I have been into other working breeds so I understand the difference between lines and why you may or may not select a particular one

In your opinion, specifically with Patterdales, why would you select from a particular line - say Stevens or Nuttall - and what PHYSICAL characteristics would you say each of these lines have?

Even within the same 'bloodline' the physical conformation can vary greatly, one lad may have stevens blood but his dogs are all 13" and black whereas another could have very similar blood but he keeps dogs that are 15-17" and they all be chocolate coloured. Same with nuttall, some are little 10" midgets whereas as other say their dogs are nuttall bred but they're 15" strong dogs with bull type heads.

I thought that may be the case.

I have just picked up a 2 ish year old. He's a demon on anyhting that moves but very good with other dogs.

Whats the breeding of yours in the pic bud? I wouldnt be lying if I said he was a spit of that dog, just without the slight white on the chest

Your question would take a lifetime to answer, in short there's nothing unique about a line. Every line has it's pros and cons but in every line there's different characters and characteristics. I keep Stevens blood, mainly because of there work ethic, coat and they're not (usually) dog aggressive. But and it's a big but, no two dogs are the same. With any luck IMO the best we can aim for is dogs of a similar stamp and style.
