Deputy Dog 28
So they have to be 3/4 long now, am I only one doesn't like tails this long? Thinking about getting a cocker, had one years back, half tail. Any pictures available of dogs pre 2007 with shorter tails, mate of mine has never seen less than 3/4. What was the preference if any. Cheers all Quote Link to post
rodders85 6
My spaniel just has a stump. About 2 inch left. Got a really bad skin infection right on the tip of her tail, it just wouldn't heel. Vet said it was best to have it off and took it right down. Gasnt been any bother since. Quote Link to post
butcherboy 68
If you're a trialler then take a 1/4 OFF. If you're a gamekeeper leave a 1/4 ON Quote Link to post
glenng 15
Why 3/4 long?. Quote Link to post
butcherboy 68
Why 3/4 long?. It looks more stylish when you're watching a dog hunt. Quote Link to post
glenng 15
Had mine done half on advice from the vet. Quote Link to post
*The*Field*Marshall* 674
I'm a wannabe cocker owner myself, and will likely purchase one in the future. I'm not all that clued up on lengths of tail - is 3/4 on not the legal requirement? And providing that's true, when would you be permitted to have any more off, down to a half tail for example?? I would like a working cocker to have as short a tail as possible ? Quote Link to post
RubyTex 1,957
My dog is 3/4 and the bitch 1/4. I prefer the quarter as the dog still rips his tail in the brambles Quote Link to post

The Vet will take off in general just the tip but can be "encouraged" down if you prefer. I have cockers with various lengths of docking and the little bitch with only a 1/4 tail left "looks" awful hunting. Shame as she is a lovely hunter. 1 Quote Link to post
RubyTex 1,957
Looks awful in what way butcherboy? Quote Link to post
butcherboy 68
Looks awful in what way butcherboy? From a trialling point of view the dog doesn't just seem to flow. Makes the back end look sticky for want of a better description. She's now too old to trial so no longer an issue. Quote Link to post
