Anyone on here with any experience with water wells?

I've got one in my garden that was filled in with hardcore and rubble back in the 50's and Im in the process of clearing it out. Its pretty bloody terrifying as 3 skips and 15 tons later i'm currently down to 37ft where we met the water table - I can't see there being much more that 5-10ft left to go (at least I hope there isn't) but i'm going to need a pump to help me get there.

Renting these is isn't cheep so i'd prefer to just buy one which I can set up down there once we reach the bottom. I can't get my head around the technicals of head height vs lift height and all that - anyone on here been there / done it?

Cheers gents - sadly a google search wasn't that simple, loads of results but the physics and technical jargon on the usage didn't make a awful lot of sense and most of the sale people i spoke to knew less about the products they were selling than i did! Found one now though.
