What's The Best Wire For Rat Snares?

I'm looking into starting snaring for a farm to do a little extra rat work.

 

Would a 3kg weight load be enough for a rat? The biggest a rat would be is 1.5lbs.

 

What's your views on that?

Why brass over other kinds of metal? Is there a particular reason, or is it just tradition?

I'm hoping to try my hand at snares tomorrow, after I finish a little ratting. I like the idea of bagging rats while I'm asleep. Also, I think it'd be cool to have a small string of rats handing off a beam for the farmer to see.

 

So what makes brass easier to use than say pike wire or something like that?
