Kelts First Time Ferreting..

Went out onto a older permisson this morning, after doing a decent job the farmer has agreed to let me work lurcher with ferrets. Ferreting was one of main reasons i got the lurcher so was looking foward to getting her out for first time. Ive still got a few things need to work on with her, hopfully in time things will all come together.

Got to the first set ( dont have any pics ), kelt had a good sniff around all the holes and there was one she always went back to, at one point she refused to move from it, the ground around it had fresh prints and shite so thought it was a good sign.. I netted up and entered the jill a few times, hoping i could give kelt some good experience, in the end nothing was happening so i moved on.

Got to the second set, was a few holes under a pylon. Once again kelt was really only interested in one hole, again it looked like it had been used recently, fresh prints etc. I tryed the jill a few times, but nothing was happening.

Second set

Kelt then fecked off to what would be the third set, while i was picking nets up she was having a good sniff, and being a wee f****r lol..

Got to the third set ( can see the ground in short vid, with afew nets ) netted up and entered the jill.. Nothing much was happening, kelt was fecking about, looking for more holes. Once she came back i got hold of her, kept her still and waited..

Wasnt long untill i heard thump thump thump and her ears lifted! Then out comes the albino, no rabbit... I reentered the jill furter down then once again, thump thump thump, kelt looking straight at the hole were the rabbit would come from, once it hit the net i let her go grab it, keep it there.

I went over and despacted it, fixed the net, let kelt have a good sniff, praised her then put it out the way. I put the albino back in, it wasnt long untill there was more action underground, this time kelt didnt leave or feck about, instead she watched and wated, looking very eager! Soon as the rabbit left the hole she was on it, alot quicker than i could lol, i have a feeling this will help alot with the odd net getting caught and rabbit getting free.I went over quick as possible and despected the rabbit and let kelt have a sniff, praise and put it out the way.

It was still morning, but it was warming up, so was kelt and the jill, i decided to try one more set and then head home.

The fourth set was netted up and jill was on the way, wasnt to long untill another rabbit bolted and kelt managed to grab it in the net, there was alot of branches etc about, i reckon if she never got to this one it would have esaped the net. Rabbit was despacted and it was time to pack up and head home.

Third or fourth set lol

After the hedge row, on the way back to motor

On the way back to the motor i passed a hedge row i pulled a few from last year, i put the albino in without netting up this time, just to see if there was any rabbits about, heard some action, kelt now knows what that sound is, ears are up! One bolts and kelt goes after it ( see vid ) she nearly had it griped then it managed to get into the hedge and escape, straight after another bolts, this time she wasnt letting this one get away.

Ill have to revist that hedge row again soon..

In the end four rabbits, it was good to get out ferreting once again, still to much cover! Was really good to see both kelt and the jill working, not bothering each other, and kelt get soe valuble experience.

Cant wait till next time

It's down to you now to watch the dog and to learn when it's actually marking, not just smelling fresh scent. To be honest every dog is different some will mark with a look some will lift a leg, straighten the tail, some will even start digging if something is at home. Just try and learn what the dog is telling you.

It sounds as if you will have a good partner there.
