Hi Paul, your best bet might be to find someone experienced with air rifles and get them to show you the ropes.

Don't even consider shooting at animals until you are confident with your aim points on paper targets. A lot of it is common sense, practice, practice, practice ! Lots of videos on YouTube about air gun shooting techniques.

Yup, go and read the thread mentioned above, I can't be arsed to type my post all over again! Also see here for a masterclass on shooting spring air rifles: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/182473-spring-air-rifle-shooting/

You're probably missing because you think the pellet travels in a straight line to where you're aiming the rifle. In fact, the pellet describes a parabolic trajectory. In other words, it starts out below the centre of the crosshairs (because that's where the barrel is), then rises to pass through where the crosshairs are looking, then rises a bit more, then starts to drop, passes through where the crosshairs are looking for the second time, then drops to the ground.

If you're zeroed at 33 yards, for example, you're also zeroed at around 13 yards. Read the thread above, especially the bit I wrote about making a note of the correction you need to apply at different distances. And don't try shooting anything living until you can put five pellets in a row into a one-inch bullseye at your far zero. Time after time.
