The Sporting Whippet Club of NI Dog Show and Race day Sunday 20th July 14 at Dunsilly Kennells, Antrim.

Although cloudy and warm in the morning, by noon the sun was shinning at The Sporting Whippet Club of NI Show and Race day at Dunsilly Kennells, Co Antrim, Sunday 20th July 14. As the country air of freshly mowed grass wafted by our noses, and views of the County Antrim landscape in our sight, it was a fine summers day on Sunday at Dunsilly Kennells, for our 4th Whippet Club Dog show of the year.

The weather certainly brought out the Whippet people from North and South of the border, along with dogs, families and barbeques. As I walked through the field, I came across a gentleman, with a pan full of sausages and onions on his barbeque, cooking up for his family. O the smell of his cooking made so hungary, but what a lovely family atmosphere was around that circle. This is what our dog shows in the summer are all about.

The craic and the banter was good, and the field filled up very quickly with some top quality whippets. It was nice to see Barry Holland coming walking slowly towards me. Barry, an avid show goer and organiser, had spent some weeks recently in hospital due to an unexpected illness. I know Barry, “Monaghan” got beat in the Ulster Final, but you certainly cheered me up to see you out again and doing well.

I think Barry, speaking to you made me realise life is so precious and it can change so quickly. This is why we should get our priorities right in life. Barry, it was great to see you out and about again, and on behalf of the Sporting Whippet Club Of Northern Ireland, we wish you a speedy recovery back to health.

Again this month, Fifty five top Class Whippets were shown in the ring, including fourteen pups. Grading started for racing at approximately 12.30pm, Followed by showing, and racing completed after the showing.

And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank our judge of the day, Rea Wilson for judging our whippets with efficiency and integrity, and a job well done.

We cannot forget the sponsor of our dog meal at the club show today, “ Nuts about Pets”. A big thank you to Basil Thompson, owner of “ Nuts about Pets “ and Marty Mc Ilmail, for your continued kindness to the Sporting Whippet Club of NI. Again this month our Whippets will be eating top class nuts. Wait to you see the shine on their coats at Birr Castle on the 23rd and 24th August.

Dunsilly is a superb venue, and all thanks goes out to Victor Mc Donald , owner of Dunsilly, for allowing the club to have their shows at this stunning piece of heaven in the County Antrim Countryside.

And finally, finally, many thanks to Patsy Mc Coy , racing manager, Sporting Whippet Club, and his most efficient assistant Mickey Quinn/Carol Hill, and all their brilliant band of helpers for a great days racing. The racing went like clockwork, and was a credit to all involved. Without good team work this could not have happened. Well done Patsy and Mickey and all involved.

Lots of photographs were taken on the day, and hopefully we will see them all up on the forums shortly.

Organisation and preparation is a key factor in the success of any show and in the absence of our chairman due to a prior engagement, Mickey Quinn certainly delivered on the day. Mickey dedicated the whole day overseeing that everything kept moving. To help Mickey along the way, was secretary/treasurer Carol Hill, with committee members, John Shaw/Mickey Quinn/Michael Quinn /John Mc Stay/ Patsy Mc Coy and Margaret Mc Stay, all waiting in the wings and carrying out any duty allocated by Mickey.

Mickey, many thanks for another great day at Dunsilly, and long may it continue.

Our next Sporting Whippet Club NI Show and Race day will take place on Sunday 10th August 14.

See you all there.

Margaret Mc Stay

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
      Margaret Mc Stay
