PLEDGEY 496
My gun cabinet won't open. Rang Brattonsound and they were great. Told me a locksmith would be in touch to arrange a date to fit a new lock. He rang tonight . Trouble is I'm working away all week and he only does 'office hours'. If it's outside 'office hours' he charges an extra £40 +VAT which I'll have to pick up. I told him that I'll have to wait as I can't be there in the day. He tells me that I don't have to be there and it'll be O.K. for him to have my cabinet open, and thus access to my guns, as he's a registered MLA locksmith. I was going to ask the FAO about it, but I know what he'll say so why waste a phone call. Also, I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing someone was at my home, with my guns out, while I'm away with only my wife at home. He's probably a really nice bloke, trust worthy and safe as houses.....but it just don't feel right, so I'll wait. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Don't blame you for waiting mate. As said he's probably a well trusted bloke and all part of the job but when only your family in the house best waiting. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
No matter what associations he is a member of, unless he has your rifles/shotguns with serial numbers listed on his certificates or is an RFD then he would have unauthorised access to your guns. So I don't blame you for waiting, i'd rather that than lose my guns. Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Seems as if you know the answer before asking for advice on the situation, better to take the hit and pay that little more for peace of mind...better safe than sorry mate. PLEDGEY 496
Got in touch with the FAO today. He said as far as he's concerned no one is to have access to my fire arms unless I'm present. He was a little concerned about what I had been told and is going to look in to it. I told him to get back to me if he got any new information on it. I'm just going to take a day off while he fixes the cabinet, it's an excuse for a day off :-) Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Sounds like the best plan Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Whilst your off you can have a good shoot after he's fixed it Quote Link to post
let'sshoot 11
I dealt with Brattonsound when my key became worn and would not turn in the lock every time. They said they could send me blank keys @ £3 each - great I thought. Then when I spoke to more and more locksmiths/keycutters - nobody would touch the key as it was the double sided brass type which are so precise that they daren't touch the keys to cut them. So, I rang Brattonsound, without quibble they sent out a brand new lock with 2 new keys - free of charge - and I fitted it myself within 10 minutes - hey presto. I suppose I was lucky as the one key would still lock and unlock the cabinet at the time, but was getting more worn every time. As I understand it, your cabinet is stuck locked. Bummer that. Alsone 789
Hmm. Brattonsound are starting to sound great on service but less than great on quality. If brass keys are wearing, then why don't they use a harder material? I always envisaged going Brattonsound for quality, but I must admit now I'm not so sure.
