Ideation 8,216 Posted August 8, 2014 Report Share Posted August 8, 2014 Now, you get all kinds of hassle if you are sending outdoor pigs to slaughter, new regs etc. So lucky about that new barn Sent one off last monday and have another going next wednesday, both pie train x. Got a saddle back and another two pie train x going end of month and then some OSB's in September. Had a couple back recently, real nice, about 65 kilo of meat back from each, with a nice, but not too big layer of fat. Also got a sow due to farrow end of month, saddle back sow AI'd to a pie train. If all goes well, should make some nice pigs. I do really enjoy keeping them, really smart and personable animals. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
unclepesta 100 Posted August 13, 2014 Report Share Posted August 13, 2014 the saddleback cross large white is a nice pig.. nice bit of fat and good taste if reared and fed right nice pigs and easy. home reared with some nice extras gives a good flavour and a happy pig. fat = flavour. leey 26 Posted August 16, 2014 Report Share Posted August 16, 2014 I've just slaughtered my kune kune in butchers at min getting chopped up hardly any meat it's all fat there's 2 inch of back fat on them I new they were a fatty breed but that's bad 10 month old thought I'd keep em longer for bacon but that didn't work. The Saddlebacks are currently about 55 kilo, ready to eat but better value to add 20 kilo to them. How much were you feeding them each day?They were fed at 5 o'clock every night and it was roughly 5 corn scoops of jock a piece not a lot they were on fresh greens too..
