Starting Working My Longdog

Recommended Posts

Hi , I am intending to work my dog , he is 8 months old saluki x greyhound and I have just been given permission to hunt on a farmers land so was wondering if anyone can advise me on what to do next as he is my first sighthound , I have done some research , he is already very allert and will give chase to anything that runs away he won't chase livestock and recall is really good.

Thanks

Tom

Get a lamp and battery and keep up with the training nothing you can do till the big cut then start him off on simple easy to catch rabbit very close no silly slips what so ever you are best having a rough grass field so the rabbit is slow so it can be easily caught this will boost ya dog confidence and that's what you need a confident dog

As Gaffer said try to give it confidence by walking up as close as possible and resist the urge to slip it at distance. If you can go out with someone who knows the job, thats the best advice really youre pup will learn by seeing older experienced dogs working and the same applys to you will learn from the bloke. Hope all goes well.
