Smoke And Mirrors!

Recommended Posts

This quest for ultimate accuracy! Is it all smoke and mirrors? I’m getting confused!

In reality what level of accuracy can be expected from my CZ 453 .17 hmr, factory barrel, standard ammo ( Remington, Hornady, etc.) off a sandbag and with a reasonable level of proficiency and at 100 yards?

I can, with a bit of care, usually achieve five rounds in a 1” bull (that’s in a bull, not just grouped somewhere on the paper), sometimes ¾”. Given that my eyesight is not what it used to be is this the best I can expect?

The same applies to my Anshutz 1417 .22, 14” barrel shooting subs. All holes touching at 25 yards, ¾” or less at 50 yards then about 1 1/2” at 100 yards.

I come back and read some of the forums and reviews and guys are talking about all holes touching or that their .17 Fireball, .22-250, .223. etc. etc. is getting ½” groups at 200 yards. It’s giving me confidence and adequacy issues !!! Are centrefires inherently more accurate than rimfires?

PS. I've just watched Darryl and Garry's vid posted below and it's settled my mind a bit.

some people can shoot better than others, some people have better optics, some barrels may be better than others. however there is a lot of liars out there, that just talk crap, all the "1 hole at 100yrds" people must be using sled guns and magic ammo. as i don't believe 17hmr in particular is that refined yet.

5x 1" bulleyes at 100yrds is far more accuracy than you'll ever need in the field, unless you are shooting mice, as there bodies are 1" targets, or rats heads.

i say keep on doing what your doing, i'm happy with 1" groups at 100yrds, with my cz 17hmr.
