what would you do

hi all i went lamping last nite and my lurcher took a bad fall after being xrayed at vets they have told me he has a compound fracture on his haulk(spelling) i have told them to operate and il just have to give him time and see what happens . any advice would be appreciated especially from those who have came across such injurys. he is 3 years old 28" and 73 pounds 3/4 greyhound 1/4 bull .

Very bad injury to have on a lurcher...very bad....had to put to sleep a saluki bull type last year with the same injury.took it to a greyhound vet, (best vets when it comes to lurchers) told me straight needs putting to sleep, will always show the injury when run hard.

In racing dogs.... usually means an early end to its racing career...

unless the vet is a greyhound vet they very rarely understand what we ask from our dogs to them a full recovery is only 1/4 in our eyes mate plus they want more and more of your£££££££££££££££££££££££££

Sorry to hear about your dogs misfortune ,all I can say is allways go to a greyhound vet for anything except the basics like jabs and wormers,we all have dogs that get injured unfortuanately its part of the game ,but a running dog vet is essential imo when it come to injuries of this sort,all the best with your dogmate !Inan.

once again thanks for replys and help a greyhound vet was going to be MUCH more exspensive my own vet who i no very well has exsperiance with running dogs and nos what i do with my dogs but i no what your saying about a running dog vet its still an option cheers again

Good luck mate, I wouldn't get my hopes up much fella. I would be very surprised if he made a full recovery, you never know tho some dogs surprise you. Thats a very good point tho about a normal vet saying the dog will be fine, to them a full recovery is being able to walk with out and discomfort. Not being able to run all night on the lamp Just want to hope the vet really does know what he is talking about.

I have a dog here that broke his hock when he was 9mth old.. he was lame for 3wks but i did not take him to the vet's straight away as i was told by a good dog lad.. .. that it was not broke..

After him not putting it down i took him to the vet's 31/2wks later.. the vet xrayed and told me it was broke but had started to heal..

He also told me to start lead walking him straight away with NO running..after a further 2mth easy walking and little off the lead walk's on the beach he was back to normal..well nearly as he has a little twist in his back leg.. but he has had a h.ell of a lot of gear over the year's and still going strong at 7yrs old... so dont panic too much yet mate..

thanks for a bit off positive feedback and although my dog is older im hopeing he will make some sort of recovery even if he is not the same as he was after op he will still have his uses . but i will definetly be looking for a pup or young dog in near future , obviously an already working dog would be best option but i really cant see any genuine dogs for sale to often
