Brambles

Recommended Posts

Right Finally got up to my permission and its CRACKING! there are pheasants, partridge, hare and plenty of bunnies even saw some dear!

BUT

The bunnies are hidden within what can only be described as hell on earth Bramble mayhem, Those of you with this issue on your permission, Do you long net and let the ferret free roam in and amongst the bramble and wait? Or do you clip the bramble back and purse net the holes?

Cheers for any responses in advance

I love brambles.

get some thick gloves.

long nets, stop nets. purse net the runs..cut paths through a week or 2 before you do it and run long nets across gaps/paths..

all depends how big and wide it is..if you can get inside/under and have a go without cutting and chopping its worth trying to see how big the Warren/set/burrow/holes are.

a lot of ferreting involves brambles.... its all part of the challenge.

a few ferrets are also an advantage to get them moving in large areas.

My hands are in they're normal Monday state, lol.... Bramble, hawthorn, holly, this weekends hedge had the lot..... Big purse nets or poke nets in the runs ( you won't get most of the holes but the rabbits use the runs as if by habit, cut them off and you'll catch)... Long nets around it or we use 6 yard stop nets, at right angles to the hedge ( most rabbits run along the hedge)...we had 9 on Sunday and only missed 1, it was a tough hedge.

Yes to collars, I leave the mk3 on the opposite side to just in case one of them wanders off I have a small bury in a massive bramble patch and as above I butchered a track through the middle, easier to see what's going on and a lot less painful ;-)

Cheers pal ! ill be taking a mate aswell make sure we have plenty of eyes to spot a wandering ferret!

Brambles, Blackthorn and suchlike,.are part and parcel of the ferreting game,...a big old patch of blackness can look quite daunting at first,.but you will find,.. as the day progresses, and the rabbits start to move,..the task suddenly seems noticeably smaller..and that football pitch sized bury,..appears no bigger than your own front room...

The most important thing to consider,.. when working long hedgerows warrens or thick dense masses of brash,..is another set of eyes... I've recruited all manner of folk to help out,...they ain't got to do a lot,.. or be experienced hunters,..they just got keep their eyes peeled for the blind spots...

Having them there, just gives you far more confidence,..and allows you to get the job done...

All the best, Phil.
