Feeding When The Weathers To Bad

Having a balanced opinion is not a bad thing, as usual it turns into a criticism rather than a discussion.

Firstly, your on the internet, if you cant take criticism, don't post, many have been slain, your not the first, and wont be the last.

 

Now you seemed to be getting along fine till the weather came along, but we live in the uk, so get used to it. As has been said, what works for some wont for others. You have an idea of what you want to achieve, but what people have suggested is no good to you.. What does your mentor suggest? Surely just keeping the feeding schedule varied during periods of real bad weather will have little detrimental affect? The few lads I know use chute`s and vary the feeding times without problems.

 

Ive said it before, having a yard full of BOP does not necessarily make them mentor material.

The weather is a pain in the a***.

I tried to fly mine over the last couple of days but she just gets blown away. I'm not worried about losing her as such as she battles her way back to us or waits in a tree or on a factory roof etc but she can't fly at stuff properly . It's frustrating and not something I've had to face whilst doing other types of hunting. Im pretty keen on my hunting and like to get out as much as possible. I've found There's a different type of commitment needed with a hawk over say working dogs,it's not all about doing as much in the field as possible, it's as much about staying positive when you can't get out and trying to organise your work and any other commitments around the weather.

Most people would have the time to fly a Harris hawk but I don't know if everyone could cope with the lack of hunting due to British weather. I'm loving my time with my hawk and don't regret moving from other hunting to do it but it's been a massive culture shock

I have a mentor, I've read the books, I fly my harris every day. The weather reports for the next few days are horrific. I currently feed of the lure and want to avoid over feeding on the glove and issues that arise from feeding in the mews.

 

Has anyone got any tricks they use, perhaps a shoot system into the mews. Just a few tips or tricks would be welcome

Hi mate, Get the Bird to step up with a tidbit, do a bit of manning and checking gear and weigh the Bird anyway. While on the Scales put it's daily ration by the Bow, ready for when the Bird is put back. Daily ration is weather dependant and weighing the Bird anyway, will show you how much to give. You can't overfeed if you use the Scales and get to know how the Keel feels at certain weights. Plus you won't overfeed drastically over a few days anyway, if the Bird is on weight in good weather.
