Advice On Preparing Longnets

Recommended Posts

Got a second hand 100 yard quick set long net. Had it laid out today to tidy up. Reasonably good condition.... realised i don't really have a clue  Long nets are new to me. Missing some grommets. Half the poles are silver birch with no gromets and i felt they might not be long enough  . I took a guess and used some elastic bands as a replacement for the grommets for now. How do you tie the draw cord (guess its only a draw cord on purse nets actually :hmm:) to the gromets? Or don't you? How do measure the bagging? We were sliding it up and down to try and get it looking even, but I was never satisfied, some areas didn't have enough... in my newbie opinion. Also I hope we kept the draw cords the same length in between poles

I think I made things worse  Kind of wish I'd started with a shorter net. But we will be getting it out tomorrow again.... and hopefully get around to using it too.

Came with seven fiberglass poles and seven birch. Think i might buy more fiberglass poles and grommets. Bit pricey on ebay though. Ive also bought two new 18 foot gate nets, haven't tried setting them up yet. Got some bamboo canes for now though.... maybe...?

instead of elastic bands use bike inner tubes cut in to strips,, use a clove hitch to attach to the the peg,,, if you put the inner tube on the peg,,then clove hitch the running line over the peg,,, then double the tube back over,, this holds it

Here's a clove hitch top right

To get it even your going to have to count every mesh I'm afraid,, and there's different measurements for different lengths of net,, depending if its 50 or 100 % bagging,, and depending on mesh size,,, TC is the man with measurements

As TOMO has said you can use a bike inner tube etc, how many meshes depends on the length of sheet that's been used and the full mesh size. Ideally you want 21 poles for a 100 yard net this will give you a 5 yard spacing. For 100% slack: if your mesh size is 4" then you want 90 meshes between each pole and 85 meshes for 4 1/4".

For a 50% slack net: 4" mesh 67 meshes 4 1/4" 63 meshes between poles.

Make sure when you cast your clove hitch you've got a selvage mesh in the knot.
