first time out this year

Recommended Posts

i was out at the weekend with my mate and i must say what a great start to the season, i rigged up a 100yrd quickset specificly for this ground as there are lots of verry large warrens and pursenets would not be an option !

we arrived there on the friday night around about 10:30 pm after a 4 hour drive so we set the tent up strait away and then it was off for a spot of lamping, we shot 15 in about 2 hours although my mate was missing quite alot as he's not used to my riffle then we went back to the tent to have a few beers n discuss the gameplan for the next days ferreting :D

satarday morning we woke bright and early although admittedly it was my mates alarm for work that woke us

we could hear the rain pelting off the tent and reluctantly we got up had some breaky, fed the ferrets and set off to a large warren that we had seen alot of bunny's around the night before, there was alot of holes to this warren although it was in the open so i put the 100yrd quickset round the warren and used the 50 yrder o cut across the warren hoping to catch any hole hoppers at first we entered 3 ferrets and we were getting the odd bolt here and there but we knew the rabbits where giving the ferrets the run around so entered another 3 just to living things up and it didnt half work  there where rabbits going everywhere at one point :icon_eek: i was nackered by the end of it running from one place to the next

we took 18 from that set then we done some smaller sets accounting for aother 8 by the end of the day we where really tired and soaked through although i had seem to forget it was raining during the ferreting and not really notice how wet i was till the end !

we went back to camp paunched all the rabbits had a few beers and a few drams by the fire :drink: , we cooked a lovely spicey rabbit liver and kidneys for starters and rabbit stew for main course ! ye cant beat a nice camp fire dinner :good:

we had planned to lamp that night again although we decided we had had too much to drink and where having such a good time by he fire that we just left it

next morning the weather was a bit better and the sea was alot calmer aswell so a different kind of netting was in order

out came the multimono gill net and my mate and had a go a netting fish in the sea for the first time we set a 100 yrd gill net anchored with to lobster pots one at each end back to shore and done a warren that the farmer had asked us to clear, it was a large set in the midddle of an open feild, we only bolted 5 rabbits from this warren although the farmer reconed it was full of rabbits.

we pottered about for a few hours packing the tent away clearing the campsite and generally just taking it easy, we where both knackered from the prevoius days ferreting  then we hauled the net back in :icon_eek: we had 53 pollack,6 mullet,12 big wrass,1 cod, and a load of crabbs from the potts, i certainly wasnt expecting all of that :icon_eek:

after cleaning all the rabbits and fish we gave the farmer a load of fish and rabbits and we also gave alot to 3 guys who stopped and helped us with the net !

what a start to the season, just hope our luck runs the full season

p.s i was planning on taking some pics but it was so wet on the sat i didndt bother with the camera, my mate took some pics with his desposible camera so i'll add them into the post when he es them devolped
