lordnelson 8
Hi this is my first post on here but I have been reading the posts for a few months. I am thinking about getting a HW98 in .177 which seems to be getting popular on here. Please can anyone tell me what they are like straight out of the box as I now have enough money to purchase one. or should I save for the extra and get a SFS stage 1 tuned or wait until the one out of the box has been used for a while. The rifle will be used primarily for hunting. Any info would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance Quote Link to post
KurtH 74
I had one out of the box and it was amazing. Ended up selling it in the end to get a PCP, but it's the best springer I've ever used. Really accurate and really powerful. Don't bother tuning it until you've had a good go with it Quote Link to post
magnummike 39
Got 1 in .22SFS stage 1 the rifle was a bit twangy from new but after the tune it was brill and the trigger was fantastic , I thought the 98 was good before the tune but it makes a big diference ,I would buy the rifle then save for the tune but deffo get it done Quote Link to post
porkybella 284
Deffo worth the tune either way i had a brand new 98 for two weeks before sending it off. It was rough out the box like sandpaper on the cocking. No jokin. But i shot a hft course with it and scored a 47 out the box. So accuracy is no prob but belive me i paid £85 for the tune i no it seems alot but honestly best thing i ever done. Its like a babys bottom now. If your close to the midlands your more then welcome to a plink. If you order the 98 from tony its a 4-5 week wait so may be worth popping the deposit down pay the rest when ready. Sure the local lads will tell you what my 98 is like now. 2 Quote Link to post

lordnelson 8
Thanks guys for the replies and to you Porkybella for the offer to try yours. Unfortunately I live in Suffolk so quite a distance to travel but thanks all the same for the invite. I have already contacted Tony Wall for a quote for the rifle already tuned and is a bit cheaper than buying and sending him the gun at a later date. I would love to go and visit him after watching VHTV videos about SFS so may go the route of having it already tuned and visiting SFS (330 mile round trip). Tony says current turnaround of 6-7 weeks which would give me a bit of time to save for the extra cost of the tune. I already have a HW77 which was tuned by Welsh Willy and it has made a big difference to an already very good rifle. In the future it would be good to meet up with some of you guys at one of the ODP meets or any other meets that get organised. Thanks again LordNelson Quote Link to post
whistler1 26
I would contact Tony at SFS,and enquire as to the price of a tuned 98 from them.Going by what they charge for an already tuned hw97,its not a great deal more expensive than a non tuned from elsewhare. Quote Link to post
