glenng 15
my spaniel bitch has chipped a bone in her hock.i have had it xrayed and the vet put her on a 3 week course of anti inflammatorys hoping it will heal back on.i have stuck to the limited exercise regime but now it looks like she is limping due to the muscle in her leg not being strong enough.she has always been a very fit dog and her good leg muscle is solid while the bad leg feels very soft.i have to go back to the vets next week to see if an op is reccomended.while i have no problem in spending what it takes to get her sorted i have a feeling the vet may be racking up the bill by the constant visits. i posted this in the running dog section hoping for some advice but nothing came of it. cheers Quote Link to post
Mickey Finn 3,107
I'd suggest waiting until her quiet period is over then start her swimming before the water gets too cold. That will strengthen her leg, and improve her overall condition with as little impact as possible. If you've not done water retrieves before you could introduce them as she gets stronger. Hunting dogs are tough, and they tend to heal well. I'm sure she'll come around for you! ATB Quote Link to post
sikastag_1 689
If I was you I wouldn't be worrying about the muscle mate its the injury with the bone you need to heal then start off building the muscle back up 1 Quote Link to post
The one 8,612
Aye i think hes waiting to see if the bone reattaches before thinking about a plaster ,splint or pinning it , its going to be a long drawn affair so dont hurry her Quote Link to post
Mickey Finn 3,107
Glenng, it may be handle differently over here. But usually, if it doesn't heal on it's own they'll cut it out. I'm sure your vet will decide what he/she wants to do soon. good luck! Quote Link to post
