just wondering if anyone has pics of how they set traps for rabbits, mine are hidden in the borrow entrance, thanks jack

yes , theyr put in the burrow entrance (one thats being used quite alot) set the trap but keep the safety catch on sprinkle fine soil over the trap to cover and fully hide it, then i use a twig to gently remove the safety catch, dont forget to pin it down so if a fox comes accross it , it wont be able to take the trap along with the rabbit, hope this help a little ATB FT

How far do you put it up the burrow ??

 

I have just set them in tunnels for rats - soats..

 

Would not mind having a crack at the rabbits..

 

Bit wary incase a dog sticks its muzzle down a hole for a sniff..

 

Do you have to widen hole as if its narrow the trap may not fire/spring ?

 

Any pictures would be help full..

you gotta adjust the size of the hole to fit the trap, if its too big , chuck some soil in and make it smaller, YOu will usually find they too small, so got to make them only just a bit wider and higher than the trap,

so long as anyone with dog walking permission knows your setting traps , i wouldn't worry about a dog getting caught, probably would only get a smack on the snout anyway,if you that worried, narrow the outside of the hole a bit with sticks, its not something i have ever done , but could stop the worry

Do you just use a little trowel ??

 

On a set - warren would you put out as many as you have or just the clean holes??

 

Would you get kills in unused ones if the others have sprung and blocked the burrow ??

 

 

I will give this a bash when its cooler.. Lot of flys about at the moment and young rabbits...

 

I fancy doing some that back onto moterway embankment.. Cant shoot it or ferret for obvious reasons..

 

Have snared in the past but loads of magpies and crows just peck them to bits.. Maybe should get out my bed earlier lol

in my eyes this is not the way to catch rabbits cause you never know what going to go down the hole .going back about 20yrs i was ferreting a place and i was just checking holes and a black and white terrier bolted out think it was lost cause couldnt see any one around.

my appologies, i hadnt realise i did text talk

 

you can use pretty much owt to make your hole right , i use a solid metal tool , made for the job, its just like a mini spade, works for me

if you have limited time and traps, block all the holes a couple of days previous and set the ones opened up again

 

toby63, i have trapped many thousands of rabbits over the years and apart from a lamb(, long story} and have not had anything exept vermin as incidental catches, if you read the advice, i say to reduce any big holes , this makes the trap work better and it also reduces the chance of something else bigger being caught, there is always a slim chance of catching something you dont want to , just like your ferret or dog could kill something you didnt want it to catch

 

if you dont agree with trapping , then dont do it , simples

I always cover the firing plate with a sheet of toilet paper before covering with earth as this stops earth falling under the plate and stopping the fen firing ..........

Moley & Socks what the most you have set out and what's your strike rate been ??

 

Can you get misses where they spring it but don't catch.. Or just blanks cause they aint using that run ??

 

is it possible to use 4 in this way or is it a no go ?? I have more of them but only two 6s..

If your setting in a well used warren then you should get a very good strike rate ... Basically if a rabbit steps on a correctly set mk6 fen then its dead ... Spend a little time setting your traps so they are invisible to the rabbit and you will catch ......

i didnt say i was against trapping dont you think if you did make a hole smaller and something wanted to go in it would just dig its way in if it wanted to.

 

of course if something wants to be in that bad its going to dig, you just have to use your noggin where and when you set them, if we all were that worried about trapping other stuff, no one would ever set a trap, snare ,or put a dog/ferret in a hole, you do your best to avoid any unwanted catches, such as if you set on a well walked footpath or playing field, you asking for bother, use common sense

giro, i can at times have 200 traps out, if im on in the summer, i expect to catch in about half of them 1st night, then about quarter 2nd night, after that im just expecting what get what i get, i have had over 400 out of 200 traps on the right ground in 4 nights, you are going to get sprung traps with a bit of fur in them, but if you set in the right sized holes , you shouldnt get to many, dunno why it happens , but it does

i wouldnt use mk 4 traps for rabbits, its illegal, even thought they are capable of killing an adult rabbit
