OzTerrier 21
Gday fellas well we have plenty of foxes here in Australia (Thanks to you) so I thought I would do a thread with some photos of some foxes that I have shot this year. I hunt foxes when the weather starts to cools down 'usually from April (start of Spring) through winter and to the end of September is what I call my Fox hunting season. There is no hunting season for foxes over here of course because they are an introduced feral pest that kill our small native mammals 'birds and reptiles 'not to mention the untold damage they do to farmers livestock. Currently here in Victoria a $10 bounty can be collected by hunters for each fox they shoot so it gives you a bit of an incentive to go out and hunt them. I have actually been slack this year with the foxes 'I have let more foxes walk past me then foxes I have shot. The foxes I have given a life to were only spared because each time I was out deer hunting and I was not wasting my time on foxes. We hunt from first light in the mornings and afternoons until dark 'im not into spotlighting (Lamping) even though it is an effective way of controlling them I am not really keen on lamping foxes. I will do it dont get me wrong I dont have anything against it 'I just find it more relaxing and enjoyable hunting during the daylight hours. The method we use to hunt foxes is calling them in with a whistle. I use a few different calling devices including an electronic predator caller 'but mainly I use the Tenterfield fox whistle. The whistle imitates a rabbit squealing in distress and can get the foxes attention from up to 1 kilometer away 'so it is pretty effective if the foxes are in the vicinity. This is the last fox I shot (June 10th this year start of Winter). It is a solid dog fox that I called in with the Tenterfield whistle. The fox charged out of a patch of blackberries 150 yards away and came running in towards my position. The fox was dispatched with 1 barrel of BB's at 10 yards I shot this fat dog fox in late April this year 'we crested the top of a hill and down below I spotted 2 fox chasing each other across the hill below they stopped for a second so I took aim at the dog and missed him 'the foxes took off running across the hill I cycled another round in the 243 followed the dog in the scope and fired 'the pill hit him square in the shoulder at roughly 60 yards on the run. I shot this fox on the same morning 'this is a small vixen though. She responded to the Tenterfield whistle and came running in directly at me 'she stopped about 40 yards away and was hit square in the chest by the 80gr pill from the 243 This Fox was actually spooked by a pack of dogs on a neighboring property 'I was sitting down with my Dad having a rest under a tree at the top of a hill when a pack of dogs were seen running into a gully 'the dogs were barking and baying and were obviously onto something. I thought nothing of it until a fox ran out of the gully and came charging over the hill directly towards me. The fox then stopped running and changed direction and started trotting down the hill 'it then started making it's way up the opposite hillface directly opposite our position 'The fox stopped and posed on a log looking back in the direction of the dogs that were still in the gully on the other property 350 yards away out of sight. The fox posed on that log for too long and received a fatal shot of lead poisoning by the 243 at roughly yards. So that's it 'that is all the foxes I have taken this year 'a pretty slack effort to be honest 'but I have been hooked to deer hunting over the last 18 months and have devoted more time to that instead of hunting foxes I will hopefully get out after some foxes in the coming weeks and try get a decent haul to help the farmers. OzTerrier 21
Cheers for the kind words fellas 'can someone give me the rundown on the rules and regulations regarding fox hunting over there in the UK. I know you cant use the hounds to kill a fox on the tradition English fox hunts anymore (Which is a dam shame) 'but what are the rules regarding using terriers and lurchers over there are you still allowed to use them on foxes..? Ratsmasher 36
You can't use and dog to kill a fox but you can use up to two to bolt them from cover or one terrier underground to bay up or bolt them. Most people just shoot them Quote Link to post
