charlie caller 3,654
Weatherby everytime mate, superb Jap engineering, mine will shoot ragged one hole groups @ 100 yards with my handloads, and with Federal factory will shoot a half inch group or less. Wow! How much are the federal factory rounds Charlie caller? How much does it cost to reload as well? Per shot that is. Cheers, Mitch I have not bought any factory loads for a while mate, but 20 ish quid for twenty, I recon I can reload .243 for about 35 pence per bang, so .223 will be a little cheaper, say 30 pence, you will not go wrong with a Weatherby/Howa mate, best value rifles in the country. I too have a Weatherby in 243 and agree it is very accurate , but i did modify the trigger as i found it a bit heavy . I also fitted a PES sound mod , harris bi pod , a schimitt and bender 8 x 56 and it weighs a ton . It makes a great lamping rifle off the roof of a pickup , but if i had it over my shoulder any length of time i would be making a visit to the Osteopath !!! A friend of mine has just done some home loads for it , and i will test them soon , but they will have a job to beat the sako rounds i usually use in it , they almost clover leaf at 100yds.The 223 i use all the time is a little CZ 527 no bi pod no sound mod a 6x42 schimitt , its as light as rim fire and it can stay on my shoulder all day and is a super accurate rifle with Sako soft points £19.99 FOR 20. Mitchell Thompsett 7
Ah wicked. That's a bit more affordable than I thought! Ah right thanks for the advice mate, sounds like I'd be better off going for the weatherby and upgrading the scope for the zeiss! Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Good choice mate, but my advice on scopes would be have a look at the Nikon range, I have one on my .243, and they are superb optics, even the prostaff, after using a Nikon I am now a big fan, and lets not forget they make some of the best cameras in the world, you wont go wrong with a Nikon/Weatherby combo mate. Useful advice in the steyr mate! Defo going for the weatherby now! Quite glad actually cause now I can spend more money on a nicer scope like the Nikon or zeiss! Cheers guys Quote Link to post

How much is it for a decent trigger mod mate? And could I get one done at my local sportsmans (Newport)? Yer I'm 200+lbs so weight not really an issue! Not gonna be walking miles with it any way! Alsone 789
I'd have a look at this video on scopes as well as it specifically looks at quality: The guy who does it has produced literally hundreds of shooting videos - you can find them all in his channel and is an ex US forces (possibly special forces) sniper. Watch a few of his vids and you'll soon see what I mean - 1st time hits at 1,800 metres in some instances. Loads of training videos. Goes through brand by brand and assesses optical quality at different price points. Edited July 31, 2013 by Alsone Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Go for the Monarch mate awesome glass, just as good as my mates S+B, trigger job 30 quid at a decent riflesmiths mate, good choice. Quote Link to post
Mitchell Thompsett 7
Ah sorted! Just heard of guys saying yer I've got a £200 trigger job in mine, thought they were all that price! Yer will have a look at those video! Cheers, Mitch Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
All that needs to be done to a Weatherby/Howa trigger is to take a small amount of metal from the face, an hone/polish it then it will be a very fine crisp trigger, it is not hard to do yourself plenty of info on the net, but it must be done safely (obviously) so if you are not confident get a gunsmith to re work it, or you can of course get a trigger kit which is what I think you are reffering to, they are not bad standard, once you have adjusted it down to about 3lbs, and I get on fine with mine. If you take your 'about 35p per bang' and break it down Primer 4p Say 39gr powder 22p (based on 7000 gr = 1 lb tub = 180 loadings Cost of brass 7p Assumed you can get 10 loadings from each case Please tell me where you source your bullets at about £2 per 100 ? lol The rounds I make for 3 people in 243 are nearer 57p per bang Quote Link to post
