Which Rifle Is Better???

Hi guys, will be in the market for a few new rifles soon, and was looking at the combo deals on sportsmans gun centre.

Narrowed it down to the weatherby vanguard, the browning x-bolt, and the steyr mannlicher mkII pro hunter.

Just wondering if any of you have experience with these rifles and which one is the best? Mainly between the steyr and the weatherby! Also do these "combo deals represent good value in your minds?

 

Just another question, does anyone know what the difference between the steyr mkII pro hunter, and the steyr mkII pro hunter mountain is? Same price and everything.

the mountain has a shorter barrel, and is a little lighter because of it. rifles are a personal choice mate, best bet would be to see if you can try before you buy or at least hold them first to make sure you feel comfortable with them.

The weatherby is a very heavy rifle , something you might consider if you plan to lug it round all day .Also the trigger pull is poor but this can be improved by fitting a timmony trigger . Most modern rifles shoot well enough , but i would go with the pro hunter all day long .

The steyr is what I was leaning towards, almost purely because of their brand reputation.

 

It's just a choice between getting a top of the range stainless varmint heavy barrelled weatherby or a standard pro hunter...

Do you know what the trigger is like on the steyr?

The triggers are very good on the steyer,cant tell you much about the x bolt though , but as with any set up your money should always go on the scope , like i said most modern rifles will shoot a reasonable group , go for quality optics , schmit , zeiss , swarovski , decent leupold .

Yer I've got a bushnell elite 6500. The Steyr comes with a redfield but may buy a second hand zeiss or leupold

Hi Mitch,If you are not going to stick with the redfield sight , i would not bother with this combo deal . Try looking on Guntrader website , you will find a decent set up for a lot less money . Check out a Tikka or Sako A T B

Haven't really got the money for a tikka, it all builds up when you gotta get binoculars, 2 rifles, another scope, a rangefinder, a good safe, etc etc! Haha

I was going to swap the red field with my bushnell, and stick the redfield on a cz455 .22lr.

Is that decent or would you advise upgrading to the zeiss, and putting the bushnell on the cz/.308 (when I get one!)

Hi Mitch,I think that might be too much scope for a 22 rim . On my 22 i have a hawk sport HD 3-9X40 , and its fine .You want to forget all the bins range finders and all the gizmos . Keep it simple , in the field you wont have time to use any knobs and buttons , you just want something to point and shoot ...quick!!!!

The scopes that cost money that i mentioned before have superior light gathering . This means that at dawn and dusk when you are most likely to take a shot you will be at an advantage . The best scope i have ever owned , and still have is a schmitt and bender 8x56 , get one of these and you will have it for life . Spend your money wisely now, buy cheap and you buy twice .Also a second hand sako or Tikka is going to be cheaper than a new pro hunter .A T B

Weatherby everytime mate, superb Jap engineering, mine will shoot ragged one hole groups @ 100 yards with my handloads, and with Federal factory will shoot a half inch group or less.

Looking at .223 and for rabbits and foxes. And then maybe some muntjac when I go on a stalking trip! (But will be having a .22lr for main bulk of rabbits!)

Wow! How much are the federal factory rounds Charlie caller? How much does it cost to reload as well? Per shot that is.
