GreyRake 108
Had a little drive around on Sunday looking for a few new permissions to line the season up with, three out of four - yes. The farmer that said no said I should come back and see the land owner when he's about, but they've had trouble with ferreting poachers in the good spots recently so maybe cleared out. So I've got a promise to a farmer from last season to start with then onto the new stuff, all were keen. Chuffed! Depending on the rabbit problem, that may be more than I need to last me the season as I only really get out at the weekends. I emailed a town council near by that has spent thousands on a rabbit problem last year and expect to spend more over the next few years. It's a town proud of the floral displays, have won awards etc. The rabbits have just been destroying the flowers. Free ferreting.... no thanks, oh well, I'll just keep paying my tax for you to pay someone else to do it, pfff Its looking like a good year for the rabbits. Might get myself out next weekend looking for more even though I might not manage it all this season. At least I could dot around them all a weekend each and keep them sweet for the future. What do you guys do, a little bit ferreting on each perm? Or sweep through every permission completely before moving on? Quote Link to post
BIG TOM 835
If its not paid ferreting I personally would pop round different perms rather than concentrate on one as you may wipe out the whole population on one perm but that's just me and it depends on how bad the problem is and how bad the farmer wants rid just my opinion of course Well done on securing the perm any way and good luck witch ever way you play it Atvb Tom Quote Link to post
The one 8,594
Try to get on every permission once a month , and make sure they get four visits in a season 1 Quote Link to post
Joe67 239
insurance helps mate, when i first started asking i noticed the difference when speaking to land owners. where about in the borders you from? i know of a couple good spots, look good for ferreting. i spread out day on each permission, keeps everyone happy Quote Link to post
GreyRake 108
I'll PM you Joe. Found I've been more successful this year. Just got a smart new car and had the GF in the passenger, think that's what made me look more, reliable/trustworthy I guess. Plus the first two sentences make a difference. Your name and "ferreter, just checking if anyone has an abundance of rabbits they want looking at" point out your not using guns until you've paid a few decent visits. Think I've got already got my rifle friend onto one perm just through the chat, will need to get myself a better rifle! Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
We pretty systematically work through our permissions, but at the start of the season, often bounce around various permissions in a day early season, doing the bits we can get to, but for the main bulk, we rotate through them all in turn, trying to clear the place pretty much. Some places we only ferret each big sett or hedge etc once a year. 1 Quote Link to post
