Acuspell 329
Was in Dover to give a kayak fishing safety and skills course. Glorious day. At the end of the day I wanted some "me" time, so went fishing for a few hours and to get some real paddling in. I was shown a rocky boulder patch under some cliffs that couldn't be accessed from the shore at any stage of the tide andt was too much of a rock garden for even small boats to venture in. 20 feet deep water would suddenly be 2 feet deep as pinnacles and boulders the size of a house reared up from the bottom - it would be a speafishing haven!I was drifting in the tide, positioning the kayak so I could cast into the white water around the rocks and those just under the surface. I got three bass in a couple of hours - never having seen the place before and I have to confess to wasting a good hour or more trying one of these new fangled shad things on a very light spinning rod. As soon as I switiched to the fly rod I got into a fish, in an area already covered with the shad......it was only 4" but too big, the skinny, early season sandeels were not that big, just 1.5" long. I had shoals of them beside the kayak from time to time. Not big shoals either, maybe 3 dozen at a time. A #4 skinny sandeel took all the fish - best was the last one, which I did retain as it is three years since I kept a bass, 57cm and 4lbs 8oz back home. These were my first for the year, I just haven't had the time or inclination to go blanking! Too busy working, even my trips to the coast working have been straight down and straight back, hence why I was keen to get my casting arm going again. It went on ice at the pub I was staying at within an hour of capture and was still in rigour when I got home - so is going to feed us and the neighbours tomorrow! 4 Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Nice one, I fish a lot just round the corner at Dungeness although mostly winter time. There has been a few big bass down there. Was there no mackerel about? Cheers... Quote Link to post
