edzy 3
Has anyone had a dog collapse on them before? i drove up to the lake district to pick up a dog advertised on epupz hes a 3 year old patterdale called DUKE lovely dog head like a shoe box and very proud standing unfortunately for the previous owner he had just separated from his wife and was moving into rented accommodation and couldnt keep him and lucky for me i got him in my kennels now with my two bitches one jack russel and a patterdale. Well after four days of having him and him not eating much i guess hes taking his time to settle in , i take my dogs out every day for execise and duke the new boy isnt quite as fit as my 2 bitches and after about 45 minutes of running about for him he just ceased up and dropped in the field yelping in pain and at first i thought he had broke a leg so i ran over to him to see what was wrong after checking him out i realised he was just cramping up after all the running he was doing so i massaged his back legs and off he went for about another 100 yards then he was down again but this time he was in a bad way all i can desciibe it as is some one having a fit and it scared the shit out of me his eyes were rolling in his head and when he could just about stand he looked like a sheep with gid, so i got back to the farm as quick as i could and got some warm milk and plenty of sugar in a jug and started syringeing it down his neck coz he was in no state to feed himself it took about half an hour til he could drink him self and when he did he drank half a bowl of water after 2 hours of being semi concious he started to look a bit better and i got him to eat a bit of food. i have put his ordeal down to not eating for days and running himself literally into the ground, so i have learned a big lesson let the dog settle in to his new enviroment and give him walking time before he runs. . dannyboy1 2
do you have a pic of the dog? Quote Link to post
magus69 0
Sounds like Ferret15's diagnosis is a pretty good one. As for why it happened you correctly explain that yourself out of condition and undernourished. If I were to run for over 45 minutes in the muggy heat we've been experiencing I would probably be worse and I'm over nourished. Carry a bottle of made up Diorolyte (electrolite drink in powder form) with you and make sure the dogs eating the right sort of stuff and let him build up his fitness and hopefully you'll not experience anymore problems. God I bet it freaked you though, thankfully you didn't panic and did the right thing give yourself a pat on the back it could have ended up being much worse. Mike... Quote Link to post

God, That hit the mark! What a great thing to come out with. Honest to god, it's the bits like this that keep me here. The guy had a problem. He sent out a plea for help and seems to have got some straight down the line advice back there. Then a simple comment like that; The icing on the cake. Real F*cking Fellowship! F*ck the braggards, the idiots, the down right sadists. When I see That sort of simple, human level of camararderie expressed in a post ....? That just made my night! Quote Link to post
