Newbie's First Post. The Springer/pcp Question.

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just introducing myself.

Owned an air rifle 20+ years ago, and now I'm looking to get back into it in my mid 40s. Buying an air rifle seems be a lot less straightforward than when I bought my BSA Meteor way back when!

At the risk of dragging up a much asked subject, I'm now going through the springer/pcp dilemma (a common subject looking at other newbies posts). Understandably loyalties to both run deep, so I'm just going to have to try both and decide. Same goes for the AirArms/Weihrauch question... I've narrowed it down to those two to try make the process easier!

Must admit at the moment I'm leaning towards an Pro Sport in .22. Like the challenge of applying the marksmanship principles etc and can't help but think I might miss that if I went down the pcp route. Apologies in advance if that offends pcp users. Don't want to get off on the wrong foot!

Hi j j m

Hi Shamo - cheers for the responses.

I know, I need to get my hands on both. I'm mid probationary period at my local club - hopefully some of the members down there might be willing to let me have a plink.

Another factor that's down to personal pref is the grip - thumbhole or not. My most treasured 'possession' years ago was my SLR (even though it lived in the armoury when it wasn't being used), and the pistol grip just felt right. Non-thumbhole feels like the wrist is cocked forward a bit. Thumbhole's that bit closer to a pistol grip. What you get used to I guess.

My local gunshop owner's advice was that if you learn to shoot a springer, you won't go far wrong. He reckoned that learning the principles of recoil teaches you a lot about your rifle, making you more likely to shoot it well. I took his advice and so far so good ! I've also fired PCP's and , in my opinion, it didn't feel like I was shooting anything at all - no recoil, very little sound and so on. (Only my opinion, before anyone rags me !!)

Any way, welcome mate, :bye: and I hope you get as much out of your time here as I have !!

Sounds like another sound piece of advice Blackbriar, cheers. Agree with your point about recoil.

Been interesting seeing how much there is to take in. Google's been busy - hold over, hold under, reticles, mil dots, parallax, fac, feo... All good stuff!!
