happy ending (ferret kits)

Recommended Posts

Ok first of all i havent had to much time to post lately but my first thing has to be is to say a huge Thanks to Feeretlove (kay) for all of the support and information she has given me through the last few months.My kits were all ok when born and up until 7 weeks they were a healthy litter of 10 :) but all of a sudden i noticed two with slightly twisted backs and all of them had extremely splayed out legs,I took the worst one to the vets who told me that he wouldnt survive the week and that i should have them put to sleep asap (lining there pockets with cash answer) i decided to give them all a fighting chance and lost two along the way,one was the runt and was extremely tiny who i did expect to lose and the other seemed to have died over night without any reason :no: against all odds they have all corrected themselves apart from the two with the slight twists,BUT they are coming along and are getting there,they play with the rest and have more life in them and are the naughtiest out the lot.....I have put some seriously hard work into these and have experienced many highs and lows along the way but every minute is a learning experience and i wouldnt go back on anything...Now if i had followed the vets advice i would have no kits and left wondering if they would of been ok, and as its turned out well im glad i followed my instincts....they are all playing and coming along brilliantly indoors away from there mum, i have to say that they were not really progressing whilst in with her as when ever they were trying to walk anywhere she was dragging them back in the sleeping quarters....i done things MY WAY and its worked and to say i feel chuffed is an understatement, Kay has been a huge help and couldnt of done it without her help....Cheers mate :clapper: so a happy ending so far and a beggining of a beautiful journey for the kits i have left :victory:

I had the same thing with my litter and I culled the whole litter, does that mean I "bucketed" them? :no: I did what I belived to be the kindest thing. I personally would never keep a ferret with a bent spine, IMO Its best for the ferret to be pts.

Just because I put a unhealthy litter to sleep dosent mean I "bucketed" them :no:

Good luck with the ferrets dougie, hope they all do well :victory:

H&J dont worry mate you did what you thought was best, thats all that matters, you didnt bucket them so to speek....i still may yet have to have the one with the bent spine pts but at the moment he gets around the same as the rest bar his back legs being slightly splayed, but as i mentioned he gets around fine....he isnt in any discomfort for what i can see and he has no trouble running off with his food :D ive worked for years with animals of all differant sizes and for anyone who thinks they know everything are in my mind big headed and anal holes :clapper: there are always new things to learn and extract from other walks of life and alot of differant ways of dealing with them...personally i took the hard decision of giving them a fighting chance and luckily enough for me its paid off,but it may not do for someone else.Ive had to cull many a animal before and this does cross your mind that the fact they could survive and be ok in a few weeks/months but what you decide at the time is your decision and your playing god....but the best thing to do is to stick by your decision and not think back over it.The only time you dont question yourself is when you have no other option of doing it, sounds horrible but it makes it easier on you that way.I have had the kit at the vets and they have x-rayed him and confirmed his internal organs are ok and its just a curviture of the spine, if he was suffering i would do the kindest thing.But these things are sent to test us and test us they certainly do, ive spent the last ten weeks completely knackered, worried and even questioning my capabilities whereas in normal times i wouldnt do this, ive been getting up 2 hours earlier,coming home on lunch breaks at work,doing long hours and spending hours every evening cleanin, taming and rearing the kits...and to see them now has bought the biggest sense of achievement ever to me....theres not much that can beat that feeling of achieving something after putting so much into it.....so im as as chuffed as i can get even though ive suffered and lost...... :victory:

:thumbs::clapper: Good post.

Are any of yours breathing funny? Thats what I couldnt bare to watch with mine :cry: they seemed to be heaving, looked like a real effort just to breath :no: I didnt put all mine to sleep at once, It was just I would check on them every morning and it was like they were all slowly getting worse. Each morning I was finding one breathing like that, so they all eventually went :(

Wasnt a nice experiance but I have learnt more than I ever could from reading a book or reading off a website.
