Fly Fishing

Recommended Posts

Have a look in Buch's thread regarding the different types of rod because the length and weight line you are going to use is different depending on the type of place and size of fish.

The brand Greys is supposed to be decent enough but there's a load of different makes out there. I imagine modern rods are pretty well made and light enough but it's probably worth going having a lesson or two so you can handle the different lengths and weights etc. You can get a reel for peanuts so you can put a little more in to the rod.

Here's a cheap Greys but I have no idea how good they are

Don't forget you will need a few spools for each line (most people have a dry, intermediate and a sinker) and each line can cost you 15-20 quid each although you could probably get away with just a dry and an intermediate. Then flies leaders etc

Are you planning to fish on lakes, reservoirs or rivers? It's worth having an idea where you will be going before choosing the size and weight.

be prepared to pull flys out of your body if your anything like me lol

seriously though i started two years ago (coarse fished for 15 years) i still really havent got the knack, had a one on one lesson and a couple of open day lessons which are much cheaper but are group orientated. i was advised but never did to take the fly rod and tie sum wool to the leader and practice on the nearest football field before actually fishing but wheres the fun in that?!

If you are fishing lakes, from about 9, to 9 1/2' should be fine maybe a 7 weight, would be ok on river allso for trout. Could do most things with that. Dont be in a hurry to expect things to happen, it takes a while to be able to put a half decent line out. Just start with a floating line and maybe if you could borrow a line from someone a weight up from the rod it will help you in learning to cast. #8 line for #7 rod, as it will load the rod with less line out therefore you will feel the rod working (spring). When you start off you wont be able to cast enough line to load the rod so it would not work right, the heavier line will load the rod with a line length that you can manage. And just one weight up it wont damage the rod. Hope this helps.
