youcanthide...BANG 1,051
just been playing with the ferrets and noticed one of the hobs has broken his right canine tooth, its turned yellow and grey. i know old timers used to break ferrets teeth routinely, and they always seem to heal up, should i be worried? he hasnt stopped eating and doesn't seem to bother him at all even when ive been touching it. thanks Quote Link to post
GreyRake 108
Depends on how much has broken off. You don't want the pulp to be exposed. Ferrets are very good at hiding pain. Watch him when he drinks cold water to see if he shows signs of it being sensitive, he might shake his head and/or slaver the water out or it could be as subtle as him squinting an eye. Can also try touching the broken bit with a cotton bud dipped in cold water to check. Certainly if it's broken to less than 50% I'd have a vet look at it. My jill chipped a little bit off hers, took her to the vet for the all clear and i only got charged £3 for the check. Quote Link to post
Joe67 239
If in doubt see the vet. Had one other day that had only root left, had to be riped out Quote Link to post
youcanthide...BANG 1,051
alot less than half chipped off probably 1 - 1.5 mm i will try the cold water thing tommorow. rang the vets and they charge a £35 consultation fee but when ive been reading about broken tooths on the internet hardly any of them required a vets attention and many just wasted their money as the vet told them its fine. see how he goes then i will take him if need be. with it changing colour i presume its been like it a while now so i would have noticed if it was causing him discomfort. only reason i noticed it was because the ferret was ragging a sock around with me when i noticed the tooth was broken. thanks Quote Link to post
GreyRake 108
Its true, most of the broken tooth cases get the all clear. Just depends on how much is missing. If you were in doubt might be best to though. £35 is alot, my vet charges £15 for a consultation but charged me very little for looking at the tooth because she just had a glance and said it was ok. youcanthide...BANG 1,051
i will try the cotton bud thing tommorow and see how it goes, the slightest twitch and i will take him to the vets better safe than sorry Quote Link to post
The one 8,547
If its no bothering him eating it should be fine but a vet still might want to pull it Quote Link to post
youcanthide...BANG 1,051
vet probably would tbh he is a right knob head. when the dogs went for their injections he just had something about him that screemed prick. i wouldnt be suprised if he wanted to put braces on the ferret as long as it cost me my last breath. he quoted me £110 for my hob vasectomised, what a joke. how he stops in business i ant a clue!
