BORDERSCOT 3,816
I remember many years ago hearing the quote below from Cus D'amato who trained Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres and Mike Tyson and thinking this could apply to lurcher or terrier pups also and wouldn't be a bad way of going about things...always been in the back of my mind when working with young dogs...maybe a bit off the wall...hey but that's me...off ma f***ing heid... "A boy comes to me with a spark of interest and it becomes a flame. I feed the flame and it becomes fire, I feed the fire and it becomes a roaring blaze" - Cus D'Amato, 1908-1985

gnasher16 31,610
Its a nice romantic notion.......but the reality of what D,amato did with Tyson is the equivalent of you giving your dog all the great guidance in the field.......but then letting him run wild when at home biting, shitting and pissing wherever it wants just so the dog stays with you !. Gnasher, as a metaphor for bringing on a pup I reckon it's a good one - it struck me when I heard it...all those years ago...and it's not too far off the mark as far as I am concerned... I think you've taken in more in the literal sense to be honest...
gnasher16 31,610
I totally understand the theory behind it.....the breed of dog i was around it applied probably more than any other in terms of bringing on a young prospect..........But same as boxing and life......theres more to an athletic dog than how he performs.
