Oh well. Can't complain, can he? Ninety three's a good innings.

Actually, I suspect this news may yet bring a mixed reaction? To many ~ myself included ~ he was a harmless enough old character who became something of a household name pretty well on the strength of the snow ball effect. One letter led to another article which got him on the radio and then along came tv and, probably, a sereise of books.

I only really remember one of his books. I don't even remember the title. But it was his views on pet keeping. His choice of ferret cage / court was, in my experiance, quite unique and not too disagreeable. What sticks most in my memory was his suggestion of installing steel rods for the end section of the floor. Idea being that, whilst comfortable for their feet, what ever the ferrets deposited there would fall or drip through.

But then, of course, in another book I read, he made his remarks about the gross irresponsibility of keeping two Staffie's together as a vicious fight Would break out sooner or later. Maybe he went on to make disparaging remarks about 'Dog Fighters' and / or 'Badger Baiters'? I honestly don't remember. But I've heard his name spat and derided since, based around what he said in that one paragraph.

People I respect greatly still call Jack Hargreaves a c***. Bill Oddie, apparrently, certainly is. But don't / didn't they bring a lot of harmless pleasure to far more than they upset?

What ever.

only just found out on here and smoochers that he turned anti, was thinking same as ditch, thought he died years ago ,i read a few of his books(a couple i can think of ,'A Weasel In My Meatsafe',and 'Of Pedigree Unkown') ,he's one of the old school, his books were interesting reading

especially the parts about ratting and terriers and keeping wild mustelids as pets,i think in the end

he was just a sentimentalist regarding animals, maybe that's why he turned anti,

Higgins.

I also thought he'd passed away long ago. I met him a couple of times and listened to one of his lectures once which was quite an inspiring experience. I wouldn't say he had 'turned anti' but he did refine his views on certain sports although he spent many years as a youngster persuing the very same as the rest of us.

I suppose I should just be glad that he signed my first editions of his books for me shouldn't I?
