sussex 5,803
Had a mate come down from london to come stalking the weekend ,originally he was coming out sunday morning but managed to get an overnight pass from home so got down saturday lunch time.I'd spent sat morn helping the guy that owns part of the small permisson i've got 5min from home doing some fencing ,as he dos'nt charge me for the rights its what i consider payback . before this i had only seen him 2 or 3 times in 2years as he works in london. The only stipulation when he gave me the stalking was that i was the only person allowed to shoot his land, not a problem as i had several seats in the wood that were "open",having helped him with the fencing for a couple of sat mornings ,and promised to help for the next 2 or 3 ,he was keen to know more about the deer control.Having reluctently let me stalk to keep on friendly terms with his neighbour he was now fully on board with deer management, not bad for 2 sat mornings,so much so he said i could put up more seats if it helped & could man them... The plan was to shoot the chicken farm saturday & my place on the kent/sussex border sunday then another place sunday evening if his pass allowed (it did'nt) ...This now changed to shoot the local farm with him in one of the best seats i have,no one other than me has shot this paddock, its score sheet is unbelieveably good, Just as the rugby was starting we left, yes he is a good mate,i put him in the best seat in the house ! I had looked at the paddock in the morning there was slot & droppings every were,i plotted up in the clover field & waited for the bang .......Nothing........Bloody Jonah .....back at the motor he had only seen rabbits, lots of them but only rabbits. No deer no foxes.....Sunday morning ...4.30am .......coffee,set of ..Got over Kent place to be met by a fairly strong s/easterly .As its a bit of a bowl the wind chops & changes constantly which makes for interesting stalking,As we left the vehicle ,through the yard & up a small incline to glass up the same field Hutchey got his 1st the other week, nothing close by but at the very top of the field there was ,even in the half light a very obvious white fallow,it would'nt be alone, difficult to get to we set out in a big circle to come in above them ,we had'nt got more than 300m when we came across onother small group, they were above us with no backstop,..............to cut the story we see shed loads ,deer everwhere,to many by far, we just could'nt get a clear safe shot......Bloody Jonah...to really add insult to injury as we left up the steep drive the field to our left there were30 plus sitting by the hedge not 5 foot away from the motor......... Back to the paddock ,back in the seat, back to normal ......Got in seat by 4.45 ,shot a poor pricket, gralloched cleaned, washed, tagged in chiller before 5.45 .... It must be him ....I would'nt want to go to sea with him we would all be swimming home ....Good weekend Bill ...... Edited March 20, 2013 by sussex Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
At least he saw some rabbits - if he was that lucky down here with the deer there wouldn't be any coney to keep him entertained as VHD has buggered the lot of them. Fancy getting the best seat in the house and drawing a blank - lucky he is a good mate or he probably wouldn't believe you! As for the give & take fair play. Ground is hard to come by down this neck of the woods so a little elbow grease and good will helps keep relations sweet for something which could easily be taken for granted so that when the recreational stalker comes knocking with his cheque book the landowner doesn't give him a second thought.
