Hurray Back To Double Figures

Recommended Posts

Getting to the end of the season but still fancied a bit so went up the road to a place opposite my parents on a run down farm that is well overgrown. Joined today by Luke and his dog Tess. Decided that with all the old piles of sticks and things lying around that we would use the longnets as much as possible. First buries were in the fruit orchard and surrounded them with two 50 yarders and a 10 foot stopnet. Luke put a few purse nets down to catch any hole jumpers. Both ferrets in and soon we had three rabbits, one back netted in a purse net, one caught by Tess and the third in the longnet.

Next we tried a bury around a fallen apple tree in the orchard and surrounded the whole bury with both longnets. Ferrets in and straight away three baby rabbits came running out, Tess got one, Luke the other and the ferret the third (taken home for ferret food) anymore and we'll look the other way when they come out ;). Both ferrets still down and then two adult rabbits bolted together, one into the longnet the other back down to be bolted again and into the longnet.

Last year we had a terrible time at a bury in an old chicken coop where one of the ferrets got badly beaten up by a doe rat, however it looked really fresh from rabbits today that we decided to try it again and surrounded it with the longnet. Both ferrets down together, they worked it all the way through and found nothing although we could hear a nest of very young rabbits that they must of disturbed, yet they never killed them and just kept looking for rabbits they could move, anyone experienced this before?

Next a small bury under a shed, surrounded again, both ferrets in and straight away a rabbit tried to sneak out, clapped my hands to make it run to the longnet (worked before) but this time it went back to ground. Then a second bolted with Tess in hot pursuit the rabbit hit the longnet and was caught only for Tess to come sliding in from behind taking down about twenty foot of net and poles and catapulting the full grown rabbit easily five foot into the air over the top of her and away to freedom (just wish we had that on video). The first rabbit then bolted and caught in the longnet.

Finally decided to try some several buries out in the hedgerows with the purse nets that accounted for another four healthy rabbits. Decided to call it a day with ten rabbits and three youngsters. Plenty more rabbits still up there so maybe one more session to end the season.

Luke may have some video footage up later on if he's caught some of the action.
