I have the good fortune to have been involved in the Deer Habitat scheme run by Stu and from my novice standpoint I must say that the single minded aim to achieve a balance between habitat results and deer stalking experience has been fantastic. Rides cleared and roe shot, high seats erected and roe shot, bracken thrashed and ,.. you guessed it - roe shot :) ..and all this has been achieved by the teams organised by Stu and his partner along with a caravan on site for participants to use, and well if you want to sleep in a tent you can do that too :D

If you have minimal experience in deer stalking and are on a tight budget then get in touch with Stu at the deerstalking-uk web forum and enquire within.

You will find the exchange of manual labour on the forestry and deer habitat both enlightening and exhausting, but you can be sure that you will get in some forestry stalking which is damn hard stalking in my book. Slow, no slower than that... check there, look there and scan that ride. . take one step then scan that ride again, look through those trees can you see any shapes, has the wind changed ?

My idea of stalking has changed from creeping about unseen to looking for sign while remaining unnoticed, identifying scrapes, crotties, tracks and fescues, wind direction and noise reduction, thinking constantly where is my rifle pointed ? what do i do next, what if I see a deer at this point ?

I would highly recommend trying this out if you are short of cash and don't mind a bit of manual labour in exchange for a handful of stalks.

I have the BDS.org.uk training manual for deer stalkers and I am going to do my DSC1 as soon as I can. In the mean time there is work to be done :)

Your most welcome to come anytime Andrew as are all the lads who have been helping on the scheme .

In fact i think you will be with us again in April if my participant logs correct. ;)

As Andrew says those volunteers who participate on the scheme and wish to get on the ladder of deerstalking and have little finance to do so and arnt afraid of doing a bit of free labour, in return we will take you out stalking where you will be under direct guidance from both my stalking partner in this venture and myself.

It costs nothing and we also provide a caravan in the forest with all supplied etc food and bedding.

Further details of the scheme can be found on www.deerstalking-uk.com but you will need to be registered to access the forum section..

March-April-May venues are booked with the exception of 1 place in May at the moment but we do get cancellations but

there are as yet no bookings for months after these dates.

The scheme will run for the duration of this year at least.

on a further Note . We can also organize DSC1 and accompanied stalking to those wishing to complete their DSC2 by prior arrangement.

Cheers Stu
