kiwi 4
who's sweet talking anyone :11: it's not rockets science the bigger the cal the bigger the noise, we don't have an issue with the noise factor here, hundreds of thousands of deer have fallen to the hornet and .222 in nz and millions more goats have been tipped over as well the fact they can do the job in the right hands is not in question, i was trying to point out that the treble is slowly been succeeded by the .223, everywhere else it seems but in scotland, we have a good indication on cals here as we tend to shoot alot more deer in large numbers, the govt cullers started out using the standard 303 because that was all that was around but as newer calibres became available they were tried and any short falls where quickly found out. the 303 gave way to the 308 and about the same time the .222 was introduced and made a huge impact to the bush hunter as he was able to carry alot more ammo and the rifles were hugely better than the govt issue cutdown 303, some cullers had been using the hornet before the .222 turned up with great success so the move up to the treble was easy. with the decline in foot hunters the helicopter became the tool for our deer control and the guys started using 308SLR's and pump action shotguns but as the vietnam war progressed the newer m16 and it's cal the .223 came into it's own and has been used since. m16 colts, benelli shotguns and mini 14 rugers have replaced the brno fox and sako vixen once used by our professional deer cullers. for my money the cost of .222 is the same as .223 here but you get a lot more choice for bullets in the .223, reloaders excluded of course. Guest baldie
I think the fact , that scotland can use .22 centrfires, has had a great bearing on , the hornet and 222,s popularity, am only speaking from personal experience, i,ve had a hornet, and own a 223, havent had a 222, so cant compare directly, but if you ask for all 3 types of ammo, in any one of my local shops, i can guarantee which one they will have in stock, with a choice of type, weight etc. Peg, the 204 ammo is £14 for 20 rounds. pegandgun 52
I think £14 for 20 rounds is not bad.You must be able to reload them for alot less than that.Mind you,i reload for accuracy not for profit! After what ive read on hear i think ill stick to my OLD .222,she does the job!!!!!!! THANKS LADS! Quote Link to post
Guest Deerstalker
quite right peg i dont think changing to a .223 would give you any benifit infact you would prob shoot the new calibre gun worse as you would nee a few rounds through it to get it up to your .222 standard. The 204 while sounds like a good calibre is to me a super varmint round. Were as the .22 cf have a dual use for me they do anyway. Quote Link to post
pegandgun 52
.222 it is then lads.(dont try and fix whats not broken.)I actually do most of my fox lamping with my .243 but there are occasions when i use my .222 and ime always pleasantly reminded how quiet, recoilless and accurate a round it is.And i think we all agree that its more than capable of doing its job Quote Link to post
