Guest Ditch_Shitter
Ferrets aren't made to eat biscuits, mate. Maybe this experiance will hammer that point home better than all the barracking I've since given up even bothering to lay on you 'new wave' people? Of course she's dying. Personally, I'd have expected a ferret to die if I fed it anything but 100% natural diet and then supplemented even that during their breeding period. What I did was feed them their proper, natural diet, year round. Then, a nursing jill I'd get some cheap Calcium tablets and grind them up. I'd rub a good pinch of that into their every feed. It stuck to fresh flesh, no bother. Never had a complication with a birth and rearing. Calcium defficiancy is most likely what's done for her, mate. Kits have literally sucked the life out of her and she just had none left to spare. They took the goodness and left a biscuit. Please don't think I'm getting at ye. I'm not. I'm just pointing out what I believe's happened there. Hoping ye may learn something from all this. Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
she has just had a jab of penicillan but look's very week fingers crossed. i may be way off here but i was under the impression penicillan was harmful to them.i've read this years ago and when put over it my vet confirmed this to be the case. sniffer 167
When i say biscuits i mean dry ferret food and im shure half the people on here feed dry food. just looked at her this morning and ther is yellow puss coming out of her but she is now eating so fingers crossed again the jab must have done her good. I'm just pointing out what I believe's happened there. Hoping ye may learn something from all this. I lost a jill who was boarding here to hypocalcaemia, her owner dropped her off with 9 six week old kits. i noticed she had moved out of the bedding area & was just laying around, i got her out of the cage & put her in a run with nothing in it to watch what she did , she just wandered round aimlessley, i took her to the vet & she was given a calcium injection & sadly it wasnt enough, she died later that day despite trying to get some fluid down her etc, i rang the vet who confirmed it was a crap diet, her owner fed dried food & a small amount of rabbit , i felt terrible about this jill dying & i agree with Ditch regarding she left herself nothing to keep her going after feeding the litter, I really think the way forward is to keep them fed on flesh, what i couldnt understand was the chap who owned the jill worked all his ferrets & yet he had not filled a freezer up with rabbit prior to breeding this jill, i find that bizarre, i have used dry food to feed ferrets but never as a staple, its just there for them to pick at , there main diet is meat which they get everday , i am a firm believer kits dont do well on a dry food diet given as a staple , they need meat & plenty of it. Hell even the fluffy pink brigade are now leaning towards a meat diet rather than giving dry food as a staple, i honestly think in 10 yrs from now this dry food will be hardly used, a complete turnaround if you like Quote Link to post

darren m 1
what do you all think about lactol or kitten milk for nursing jills ???. i know not natural but , if calcium is vital is it a good idea . my jill and kitts ( 12 ) all were fed on it as a supplement up to 8 weeks old and there all thriving well , in fact too well , there huge in comparision with others i,ve seen .
