High Quality Ox Spring...

Recommended Posts

When you search "ox spring" all that comes up is constant abuse over how cr*p it is. The all too well known twang, that this square section spring has come to be so badly known for. The over powered, over coiled spring that destroys guns.

However, iv had a far different experience. i have recently tuned my HW80 to a spec that i aimed to match the work of v-mach to do this i have:

re-shaped the transfer port and polished it

rehoned the front section of the cylinder and polished the rear

cut a recess in the back block to accommodate the spring guide

fitted a v-mach c-form piston seal

cut back the piston to accommodate a delrin ring

short stroked the piston

cut a ptfe piston liner

machined both top hat and spring guide from delrin for a tight fit in the spring

used the top quality Maccari lubes

and finally the most top quality spring...

An ox spring, this spring had been polished to a mirror finish on all surfaces, then coated in maccari's heavy black tar. the reason I chose the ox was the appeal of its rapid acceleration, this combined with the short stroke provides for a fantastic lock time (one of the key components of accuracy).

The ox is a custom part and in that right should be treated in that way, as all custom parts need to be optimised in there use, so a custom guide and top hat is essential for optimum performance. As most air gun tuners know the cause of spring twang is ill fitting spring guides, so if the spring guide is a tight fit in the ox, all twang is eliminated.

The reason that twang is so dominant in ox fitting is that it has a larger than usual internal diameter so the factory guide is exceptionable loose. When this issue is resolved, the ox spring is a thing of beauty in its work.

Sounds like you know your stuff

I'm sure the OX will be fine until it either snaps or collapses. Recent OX (and Titan square section springs) are not a patch on the quality of them from years ago. I remember fitting them to many rifles back in the 80's when they came out and they were very good so long as the rest of the gun was set up to suite. Can't say that these days though, sadly.

Cheers andy,

I haven't had any experience with the older ox springs but was rather impressed with the ones in production now (maybe i got lucky!). i wouldn't usually go to the bother of reviewing a product, but i just felt the ox is often beaten down far too much.

Also thanks again for your advice re the hw98 barrel fitting on the hw80.
